Ex-Argo Theismann rips Ricky

Oh my gosh, Joe Theismann has just ripped Ricky Williams a new one on ESPN radio.

The former Washington Redskins and Toronto Argonauts quarterback and punt returner said Williams is a "good kid," but one that shouldn't be allowed to play on anyone's team anymore.

"Listen, we have rules in the National Football League," Theismann said. "It's real simple. Don't do drugs and you can play. It's a privilege to be able to play professional football. It's not a rite of passage. He's insulted the Miami Dolphins after they took him back and gave him a chance to play.

"Now he insults the intelligence of everybody that thinks that doing drugs is OK. To me, it's the wrong message to send to kids. It's the wrong thing to be doing, and the Toronto Argonauts have embarrassed themselves as an organization by signing him."

Theismann, who played for the Argonauts before all of you were born, said he no longer wants to be associated with the organization and doesn't take kindly to being mentioned in the same breath as Ricky.

"He's a disgrace to the game," Theismann said. "The man doesn't deserve to play football. He should go on with his life and treat his drug addictions or go do whatever he wants to do. He's been suspended from the NFL on multiple occasions. Doesn't anybody have any class anywhere? For gosh sakes, let the kid go do what he wants to do. He doesn't want to play football."

By the way, Joe Theismann will be appearing on your TV sets every Monday night this fall as one of the commentators for Monday Night Football. I'm sure all Ricky fans will welcome him into their homes.

Joe T has never never bothered me with what he says in the booth or out, I know many " I can't stand that freakin guy!" fans. O.K. this time Joe you're harsh, more so than you were to the dolphins back in Super Bowl XVII. Kick Rick out!? You are freakin insane. This weed thing is a joke. First off its legal in half the states and Canada. I know the NFL bans it ,but give me a break man........LT on crack, sack, sack, sack, MAYBE LT SHELLACKED YOU ON CRACK ONE TO MANY TIMES.......still an NFL legend. How about aaalllllll the prescription drug abuse in sports, Look at Bonds, still goin strong. Joe T's harsh words fuel the hypocracy.

Ricky got robbed. Miami fans got robbed. The NFL and its ass backwards drug policy is a joke. Max Mgee can blow off Lombardi and his curfew, show up to the SB smashed and hung over, instant legend......Add one more name to the list of " I can't stand that freakin guy" NFL fans.

Apparently Theismann isn't familiar with the case, or the unofficial reports surrounding this suspension. The Dolphins and Saban, who had access to the record, supported Ricky all the way. We may never know what really happened, but that fact alone speaks volumes.

Ricky a disgrace, Didn't the NFL and the Rams allow a twice convicted drunk who KILLED A WOMAN play. That is a disgrace Theismann, get off your high horse pal!

According to certain sources, it looks like just because of your tokin' RB, the CFL is getting an American TV contract, and the Argo's season ticket base is swelling with Benjamins (as opposed to Bordens). Miami has Ricky back at the end of the 2006 season, and the CFL has more money.

Awww .... poor Joe is upset . Whatsamatter Joe,not enuff camera time lately ?
You were a great player both here in Toronto and in Washington .
Those days are over , as is the mindset of the general football fan , be it CFL , NFL ...wherever .

Joe Theisman had a rather marginal career as a one dimensional quarterback in the CFL for a year or two. When one thinks of the great QB's of all time, well poor old Joe isn't going to make the list for either league. And he sure as hell isn't John Madden in the booth, or even as good as Boomer Esiason who is rather ignorant as well.

And to Canadasucks, well, we'll gladly welcome Ricky and any other person who is dodging unfair rules and prohibitionist stereotypes that have been abolished in most of the free world including Canada, nearly all of Europe, Australia, NZ, for half a century or more now.

By the way Ricky became aware of and knew he was limited by the system we live in here full of lies and half-truths. He said he realized that he seemed to be looking for validation and praise, rather than just being content in who and what he is and has been given. So he needed to calm his mind and figure things out. What a crime to use marijuana while depressed!! What a crime!!! It's not like there has been anything going on in the world at all, right? What a sad vampiric attitude Joe has, I guess attacking fills him up in his almighty ego. Joe's comments represent to me the upper-class man who is and who has been dominating all the Americas from the very beginning. Can you say social and economic totalitarianism??

I say Ricky is looking to get out of the constraints he was born into. See Martin Luther King Jr. had similar ideas about energy and life too that we're a bit radical for conservative dogmatic folks when he stood up and disobeyed the "you're either with us or against us message" that has been used by schoolyard bullies and resonated by imperialists throughout history well we all know what happened back then, but what happened to the dream?

I say Ricky too, has a message for everyone who is sick and tired of all the struggles, stress, and pretenciousness that is thrown at each and everyone of us every day. He has his path now. One that teaches to join and unify in peace, not seperate and judge ignorantly by deciding without looking into the facts. It's time we all gained enough courage to admit to our mistakes and move on without guilt or fear. Otherwise we are trapped in Hell also known as regret.

Look, I think Joe was too hard on Ricky. Having said that, to compare Ricky with Martin Luther King Jr.? That's a bigtime reach.

I say Ricky will improve his hands in the pass happy CFL. Off the field though, I hope he challenges old perceptions and ideas with his walk and his success that's all I am saying. He may not be a revolutionary like the great Martin Luther King Jr. however he's has been challenging perceptions along the way whether he likes it or not. I look at the guy and see someone who overcame his demons and that gives me hope that I can find peace or nirvana or heaven or whatever you want to call contentment. My Luther King Jr point was to showcase just how different the rules are for Ricky or any other person born under US rules and laws. Just being caught with a few joints and people get decades in jail in most US states. It's bullshit. Particularly with all the cocaine and subsequent need for nasty drugs that has been taking over your streets since the mid 80's thanks in large part to the nicaragua-contras fiasco that brought tons of cocaine here to the US and Canada as well. Yeah thanks for the supply, we need all the street crime. So my point is how could and why would Ricky even choose to listen to rules from some unseen power that most the world percieves to be oppressive and parasitic to the vast majority of people in the middle and lower classes. I guess this is too abstract, but well I really relate to what he's been saying up here, both football and spiritual.

Joe's just taken his own issues out on Ricky. His son is a convicted drug abuser.

When Joe played in Canada he was the talk of the town along with Greg Barton. Argos signed both in 1971. Joe had a great career here al-be-it short one but he was well respected. Ever since he left he has done nothing but bash the CFL. "Three downs and a ferris wheel" he said in a book he wrote. Ok the CFL is not exactly rolling in money but all the teams have Canadian kids who want to play mixed with imports(Americans) to balance it out. Canada is sorta like Amsterdam. We do not hold hate in our hearts and forgive easily. No death penalty here either. Why don't you hang one on Barry Bonds, that seems to be OK for Americas pastime.

Apparently Joe Theisman is trying to become the Bill Walton of the NFL. Annoying, close minded, and wrong. Ricky Williams is a disgrace? We've already mentioned L.T. and Leonard Little. Wasn't Brett Favre addicted to pain killers? Speaking of killers, how about Ray Lewis? Nate Newton had 300 pounds of weed in his trunk. Selling and transporting it must be o.k., but smoking a little weed is embarassing for the league. Mike Irvin. Bam Morris. The list goes on and on. Someone tell this ass to shut up.

ESPN should be embarrased to employ this man. Who does he have pictures of to stay on the air? Is he the only media person who actually knows what Ricky tested for? Since no one else has said? Other than the few times he did the pot - vs murder, rape, etc.

I hope Kornheiser has the guts to rip him to shreds this fall, for comments like these.

To add to the hypocracy already noted - about what others in the NFL can get away with -:

a) His main forturne was made playing for the "REDskins". A name that makes fun of Indians. Any NFL disgrace for that Joe?

b) He works for ESPN. They just aired a show about a guy - Bonds on Bonds - who cheated to glory. Any thoughts on that Joe?

I never really liked this Theisman clown. Something makes my skin crawl when I hear this fool speak. I guess now I know. LT should have broken Joe's mouth instead of his leg.

Dear CC,

Yep, Joe Theismann returned punts for a while before he became the Redskins starting quarterback. I remember he returned one about 60 yards for a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys in a 28-21 victory. Can't exactly recall the year, but it must have been mid to late 70s. How's that for some NFL history?

side note - what of the earlier post re the organization "dotting all i's and crossing all t's"?

It sounds like all we have is a promise from a man and his agent who have done nothing in the past to suggest they can be trusted.

I'm a bit confused about your prior report! What's the deal
?

Theismann's a hypocrit as well as the NFL on a whole. they ban a guy for substance abuse but allow guys who've been repeatedly arrested for violent crimes (ricky manning to be current) and other felonies to get slaps on the wrist - if any punishment from the league at all. they use the logic that the courts will deal with these guys for doing illegal activities but in that case the drug test should only check for performance enhancing drugs. and if others are found that are not performance enhancing they shouldn't be suspended but required to complete a rehab clinic stay or something that helps the player.

Ricky smokes a little weed keeps to himself and doesn't hurt anyone ( in the physical sense) and Joe T. thinks he's a disgraceto the game. So tell me Joe what do you think about all of the wife beaters playing in the NFL, the ones who have been arrested and charged for DUI and talk about making a mockery of the game let's not forget Terrell O.

And for the idiot called canadasucks, you must be a redneck, last time I checked Canada was one of the better countries to live in, just ask all of the draft dodgers from the US living in Canada.

Anyone hear Ricky's response to Theismann's comments?? He basically said that Joe is entitled to his opinion and that he respects his opinion. Talk about taking the high road.

I've always thought that Theismann was great at analyzing games and telling us things we as the audience didn't know instead of the mindless blather other analysts give us during the games. As Theismann gets older though, he really becoming an old, bitter codger. To attack Ricky in this manner when there are a good 5 to 10 NFL player who did a lot worse things than Ricky that are still playing in the league or elsewhere, is just plain ridiculous.

Be prepared for Redskins bias on ESPNs MNF. Theismann was a Redskin and Kornheiser covered the Redskins for the Washington Post. We'll see, I guess.

Also, a little laugh at Joe Theismann's expense.....when his wife divorced him, she took ALL the money from their bank account. Poor ole Joe goes to the bank the next day to get some cash....when the teller says he has no money...he goes ballistic, pulling the "don't you know who I am" routine. The teller says "yes, you're Joe Theismann, and your account balance is $0...have a nice day!"

He needs to punt himself in the ass for these dumbass comments.

Theisman is the same person who changed the pronunciation of his name to rhyme with a trophy, he also ditched his wife and kids after winning the superbowl to hang out with a hollywood starlet that dropped him two seconds after his leg snapped in two. Couldnt of happend to a more deserving person. Leave Ricky alone, nobody on the face of the earth paid as much as he did for pot, a substance that is ilegal for political reasons, not science.

Theisman is a joke.. I cheered the night Taylor took him out.. Sad part is I was setting on the 40 yrd line at JFK and had season tickets and everyone around was also cheering... What does that tell you... I really hope Ricky gets his act together. Maybe this is a chance for him to show the NFL he made a mistake and he is ready to make a difference... Time will tell.. Ricky is by far the best RB I have seen in a long time... Next year should be something special...

This Williams saga has become rather bizarre. As a Torontonian, I would say that the Argonauts have shown some considerable moral flexibility in signing this guy and justifying it. On the other hand, this rent-a-player move should pay dividends for the team even for one year. What I find most bizarre however is why this guy would play for "chump change" in the CFL after all the millions he has made playing in the NFL. If he does badly need the money, it boggles the mind to think of the money squandered.

armando that last post by you is why its so easy to for a lot of the bloggers to have apparent dislike for you - and that's putting it nicely. you don't have to point out that you said the same thing a couple days ago. people who read your blog a couple days ago will remember, obviously this guy didn't read it. still instead of saying you said it, you should just sit there and know at least someone agrees with you - the feeling of vindication or something similar. i don't dislike you myself though after this post it might seem that way. i enjoy ur blog and prior to moving out of miami last year enjoyed ur column in the paper. just pointing something out that might not have occurred to you about how other perceive you.
also, cuban i hope everyone read your post twice and wish they finally got it.

He is a blatant moron if he can single out one person and point at their flaws. I FIND IT DISTURBING THE NFL, INCLUDING BROADCASTERS PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE THAN PHYSICAL ABUSE, RAPE, ETC. WHERE ARE THE FINES AND MEDIA OUTCRY FOR THAT???? Joe Namath is worthless. Maybe he is lashing out because of his horrible parenting skills led his son on a path to crack cocaine addiction. Break a leg JOE.

This is not surprising for Joe T. He has been a self centered, arrogant jerk since he came on the scene. His talent was always far below his opinion of himself. If there is any disgrace to talk about, it is that he will be in the Monday Night Football Booth shaming all the great commentators who came before him with his inane banter and uninformed opinions.

Seems to me that anyone complaining about all the chances given to Ricky W., has not considered the very high cost he's paid. Everyone loves a scapegoat; barry Bonds with no mention of mark McGuire, and Ricky with no mention of all the fine, upstanding players the other bloggers have mentioned. Aren't we all missing the obvious? Ignore it and it will go away! This media bashing only works, because we buy into it...

It's too bad that the old prick can't just stay home and leave the playing to real players, unlike himself. Just another BIG LOOSER for Monday Night Football just like Dennis Miller. I think the MNF team gets worse every year, and this just proves it. I wish Ricky could knock the hell out of him, but Ricky is too nice of a person unlike the dumbass making them remarks.

You have got to be kidding!? Joe's got a problem with his mouth running faster than his brain. He knows football but he likes to come up with controversial statements purely for the sake of controversy. If you listen to a whole game he does, you'll find his second half statements are contrary to many his first half statements.

I predict he'll have one MNF season and be replaced

Adam Schein of FOXsports.net makes an interesting point. Why didn't Theismann criticize Toronto when they signed "noted substance abuser R. Jay Soward". My thoughts, Joey T. would not have recieved any attention for talking about an ex first rounder who never made a name for himself in the NFL. But, that pretty much goes without saying.
