What ever happened to a new offensive coordinator?

It's been over two weeks since Tony Sparano was hired and still the new head coach hasn't hired a new offensive coordinator.

Problem?

You bet.

Sparano has been trying to hire his coaches and has pretty much completed his staff, with the offensive coordinator's job as the notable exception. And it hasn't been for lack of trying.

He tried to hire New Orleans coach Pete Carmichael but was thwarted in that effort when the Saints convinced Carmichael to stay. So that effort failed.

There have also been suggestions Sparano is waiting until after the Super Bowl to hire Giants quarterback coach Chris Palmer, who was something of a mentor for Sparano years ago. But ESPN.com NFL reporter Len Pasquarelli, a friend who has outstanding sources on all things NFL, tells me Palmer will not be headed to Miami.

I've not been able to figure out why Palmer would not be the guy -- considering he's done well in similar positions in the past and has a good history with Sparano -- but he is apparently out of contention for the job.

So where does that leave us? Well, I could give you a list of possible candidates that are available, but frankly, it would all be speculation so I'm not going to do it.

Instead we'll just have to wait for Sparano to come up with another solution.

Stay tuned.

I really hope this doesn't turn out like last year. Cameron searched high and low for an OC, but in the end decided to call the plays himself. I really hope Sparano doesn't go that route. We NEED to have an OC on the staff.

It's ridiculous if they don't want Palmer. Stupid.

I'm glad Sparano and Bill wont be hiring this guy Palmer. His offenses is Houston and for the Browns sucked. People keeping saying look at Eli this year. First its only one year and second Palmer isnt calling the plays. We need a Young guy with some fresh ideas.

Nothing on Hue Jackson?

I'm also glad they aren't going after Palmer. His play calling is just horrible. He's predicatable, bland, and shows less creativity than a cup of coffee. We would do quite well to avoid him. As a comparison, his play calling is about as effective as Mularkey's.

I didn't see where Armando said they (Parcells,Ireland, and Sparano) didn't want Palmer. I don't think that's what Mort was getting at either. Maybe Palmer is going to be staying in NY because they are going to promote him. Who knows but we are rebuilding and I don't think our biggest worry right now is OC. I would say it's not even in the top ten of concerns. It's not like a good OC is going to put us over the top next season. Also, ("in other news, I washed my socks last night"), that was hilarious!

Armando, you really didn't explain why you think it's a "problem" that they haven't hired an oc yet. Training camp doesn't even start for 6 months so I think if they hire someone by the end of February (or at least before mini's start) they will be fine. Does anyone see a reason why that is a "problem"? NYScott

Hey NYScott, actually this paragraph:

"I've not been able to figure out why Palmer would not be the guy -- considering he's done well in similar positions in the past and has a good history with Sparano -- but he is apparently out of contention for the job."

suggests that we didn't want him rather than he didn't want to come.

Why does it always sound like the media trys to tear down the coaches before they even are given a fair chance? Is it jealousy because that is certainly how it comes off to the readers. OH NO! It's been a full 2 weeks! Why haven't they hired someone yet?! It's not like they've been busy completely revamping the coaching staff or something as monumentally daunting as that. I mean come on, Sparano has been here two weeks, he should have this whole mess figured out by now.

"And it's not for lack of trying". So then Armando goes on and says they only tried to hire one guy (who was a long shot to begin with). Yep, sounds like they've put all kinds of effort into "trying". "So that effort failed". You sound like such a bitter crybaby. Are you seriously pointing out this little blip as some major failure on Sparanos part? Maybe you should follow the guy around all day and get the real dirt. 1:40 pm followed Sparano into the bathroom and he failed to put the toilet seat back down. 1:55 saw Sparano driving away and he failed to yield right of way. 4:50 watched Sparano pick up his pizza where he failed to give the proper amount on the tip. 5:30 pm followed Sparano to his home where he failed to givehis wife a kiss hello. Shut up already. I can't believe this crap is happening all over again. Pretty soon we will be seeing the fire Sparano nut jobs. 'But guys the season hasn't started yet'. 'Yes but Tony failed to sign Tom Brady so he sucks'.

We really need an O-coordinator. The coach needs to focus on the more important things, like the dominoe tourneys.

Anonymous. Doesn't that paragraph just point out why Mando can't figure it out? I don't think it means that Sparano doesn't want him. Also the trio has been very tight lipped when it comes to telling the media anything they are doing right? Armando has even told us as much so how would Len P. have info on what the Dolphins want to do? I would think he would know this more from having conversations with Palmers people. Oh well, no big deal anyway. They'll find their guy so there really is nothing to worry about in my opinion. But thank you for trying to clear that up for me. NYScott

It seems that our new management group is very willing to raid any organization of it's staff as long as they aren't dicking over a protege or close colleague. Maybe Parcells doesn't want to steal Palmer from Coughlin...thereby presumably weakening his staff. Who knows...it's just a thought.

Armando and Len are obviously friends so Armando has a high opinion of the guy. Remember that Armando also worked at ESPN so he's biased.

I see nothing wrong with that.

Furthermore, we still haven't hired a water boy, and its already February! What's going on here? Word is Sparano wanted to hire the 80 year veteran Milo Bucket, but it appears he is too old to carry the water right now. Jerry Jones wised up and already gave Cowboy Agua a huge raise, so he won't be following the rest of the clan over to Miami. My friend Ben at the Federal Reserve, who knows everyone, everywhere, says we are holding out for the Super Bowl to end so we can steal the winners' water boy. The theory there being, if we go 1-15 again, we can certainly elimante the water boy as being the problem. Stay tuned...

BRETT
Does Len Pasquarelli have a rare breed of animal on his head? I can never even concentrate on what he says becuase of his hair helmet. If Zach wore that he wouldn't of gotten concussed so many times.

I've always thought that any post is better than no post... but I'm starting to wonder w/ the recent posts like JT being a finalist for a "good guy" award, 'Mando being a mind-readed and trying to figure out what Ireland meant by saying he may have some plan for Zach in the future, JJ now wanting to suck on Marino's weiner and now the big problem with no coordinator in January! That qualifies as bringing nothing to the table! On an aside, if batman drove a batmobile and Parcells could drive a tunamobile, then what would 'Mando's car be?? I also heard that we were going to trade Brian Weidemer for Chris Weike.

The Dolphins suck because Miami sucks. Can't bread a good team in a cesspool of racism and ignorance where every one of the 19 ethnic groups that live there all hate each other. I've spent enough time there to know. Miami is a sad example of an American city. At least the Dolphin players are a class above the pathetic society they are stuck in.

It won't be easy, but I would be willing to handle the Dolphins' offensive coordinator job while also handling my other duties for my new team. I have a good history of multi-tasking. Speaking of multi-tasking, it looks like you must be doing two things at once, Armando: sleeping and writing. Can you say, boring?

A mere listing of OC possibilities would be engaging in 'speculation,' and we know Armando would never, ever do anything like that; don't we?

I am speculating here that the first NFL team to offer Mike Leach, the Texas Tech head coach, a job as OC, will field the most innovative offense in the NFL. The stick-in-the-mud NFL OCs 'look to take advantage of mismatches.' Mike Leach manufactures them. But Miami won't be that team. I don't think Leach has any BOB (Buddy Of Bill) connections.

To Sunnunnunnunu,
I do prefer any post over no post. I applaud 'Mando for being the quickest, and normally the most accurate, to post updates. We all want the latest info on the 'Fins. I'm just say saying that 'Mando's recent posts are as informative as people washing their socks. Free agent rumors, franchise tag rumors, hiring possibilities, new coaches' opinions of current personnel, etc. would be appealing to me.

You know, I think I may have figured out why S. Florida fans don't support their team. S. Florida Dolphin fans have a rep of being among the worst in all professional sports. But now I think I know why. You have to look at those who help form public opinion. REPORTERS! If all you S. Florida fans read is negativity about your team, it's NO WONDER you fly off the handle at every little thing. You fans in S. Florida ought to demand more from your reporters!

"Palmer will not be headed to Miami"

Not to nitpick, but why would Palmer be losing his head if he moved to Miami? It's not THAT bad! Armando, you are a journalist, you should know better. "Palmer will not be heading to Miami" would be the proper way to relate your message.

It really amazes me that some of you guys comes to this blog and complain about the substance of a blog. First, a blog is not meant to be all factual. It is merely the writers thoughts put to paper. Second, it is his job by what ever mean necessary to create blog entries that provoke conversation from all points of views in order to keeping you coming back time and time again. So when you are complaining about the relevance of importance of the blog entry, the writer has accomplished the goal set forth.

Stop looking for blogs to be your source of information; they are mainly for entertainment purposes only.

For the blogger who asked about the big deal on not hiring an OC, OC’s began installing their systems long before mini-camps begin. The longer you go without one, the further you are behind when mini-camps begin. After the Superbowl is played, skill position players began returning to their teams facilities to work with new OC”s and QB coaches on the new systems. So you know, players such as Marino, Farve and C. Palmer have stated that it takes at least 3 offseasons to implement most (not all) of the offense if you have the same coaches intact. So yes it is a big deal that no OC has been hired if he is not going to be a puppet’s of BP.

ROTFLMAO…

Armando and Len Pasquareli are friends, how fitting….both blurr the lines a reality and truth just to be first and sell a story.

My favorite Pasquareli moments came during the Michael Vick ordeal, specifically with an article stating that he had sources saying that Michael Vick WON’T be indicted 48 hours before he in fact WAS indicted.

Maybe they were the same sources that told Armando that the Dolphin’s were questioning Zach Thomas’ heart to return last season.

Since the OC job is as yet unfilled and the stream of candidates has trickled to naught, what might be the explanations?

Are we waiting for someone who is still with a Super Bowl team? If it's not Palmer, then who is it? New England's nominal play-caller? Someone off the radar? This seems the most likely scenario since no one else is coming in to interview.

Maybe Sparano and company aren't panicking because Tony thinks he can handle the job ala Holmgren or Cameron?

Maybe reports and rumors are just that and the OC we don't think is coming really is?

Maybe one of the guys already hired can do the job, but hasn't been announced yet while someone else is still making up his mind?

This is the speculation that Armando wants to avoid?

I suppose we'll all know in the coming week. It shouldn't be much after that.
