Ozzie Newsome: Dolphins not picking Jake Long

Ozzie Newsome knows the Dolphins need an offensive tackle. He is aware the Dolphins are talking to Jake Long. But that doesn't make him believe the Dolphins are going to actually draft Jake Long.

No way, he says.

“I think one of the best parts of the draft is the intrigue that goes with it with what other teams are going to do," Newsome said. "Right now, probably half of you think Jake Long is going to be the No. 1 pick. I’d probably smile and say that’s not going to happen. And, [Miami is] negotiating with the kid right now, for whatever reason."

Newsome believes the Dolphins are still desperately trying to trade out of the top pick but would end up picking Chris Long if they have to stay at No. 1. Newsome's guess is as good as any because he bases how he handles the Baltimore draft, in part, on how Parcells has traditionally done things.

“I give Bill a lot of credit," Newsome said. "You probably can take eight to 10 teams in this draft that are byproducts of what Bill started with the New York Giants. You take New England, then you have Atlanta, the Jets, you have us, Jacksonville and Cleveland.

"A lot of what we do started in New York with Bill Parcells. Now, he has the first pick. But, I go to sleep every night – and this is what I learned from the first draft when we were picking fourth: If you’ve got four players, the other teams can’t get four. They can get three. So, I can go to sleep every night knowing that if we have eight players, we are going to get one of those eight. That’s the comfort level I have. I have spent a lot of time with Bill. But he is not going to tell me, and he’s definitely not going to tell you all."

Mando,

Who the hell cares what Ozzie says!!!

What Ozzie needs to do is trade with Miami for the 1st pick of the draft!!! The ravens get there guy Matt Ryan and we get the 8th pick of the draft and there 38th pick in the second round. The fins save 30 million dollars and they would have 4 picks on DAY 1. (NOW THATS HOW YOU RE-BUILD A TEAM)

MANDO, IF OZZIE DOES NOT WANT TO MAKE THAT DEAL, ME AS A DOLFAN, CAN CARE LESS WHAT HE THINKS

Ozzie Newsome knows what he's talking about so this comment combined with jeff Ireland's Freudian Slip adds fuel to the thought Miami will go defense with the first pick.

It always amazes me that everyone says Bill is a master and throws smokescreens and all that,...and yet if you ask these experts or insiders they'll tell you definitely, they're SURE what Bill will do with the number one pick. Why don't we just go round robin and ask everyone in the NFL what the pick will be. They should all come up with the same answer, right??

The O line is decimated. And since they're rebuilding it makes sense to take the best LT. That's if there is no franchise QB on the board, and that's IF they can't trade down. So the number uno preference has been and still will be to trade down. If we can't do that, then they'd want Jake Long. That's why they're negotiating with him. It's not to "fool" us. If you believe it's just to fool us, or fool other agents then you're ALL fools.

What on earth is a zydeco cowboy? is that like a rhinestone cowboy without the rhinestones?

Glad you posted this Mando. Shows that our best opportunity to trade down is with a team that picks, for example, 6th but can't decide on a best 6 players - only a best 2 or 3 or 4 or 5. Since they can't make a group of 6 they'd be happy with, they either need to trade up OR down.

The Dolphins are still hoping that someone will offer them a deal for the #1 pick. After all, the Heat got rid of Shaquille O'Neal.

Ozzie Newsome says? Ozzie doesn't get paid by the Dolphins. Ozzie does his best for his team. The Dolphins management do the best for the Dolphins. Every team in the league would like nothing better than to fleece the Phins and leave them 1-15 for eternity. It is up to the Dolphins management to change that. Whomever they feel makes the team better is who they are gonna pick. Long, Long, Ryan, Gholsten, or McFadden, whatever.
I am hoping for the offensive line. I like offensive lineman that beat on defensive players.
One more thing. Parcells is running the operation. That doesn't mean he is be all and end all to management. They have some good people in there. They share the same philosophy of winning. I really don't think it is all up to Parcells.

Listen you schmucks... What Ozzie Newsome says matters because he's an NFL GM. He is the target audience for all of the Dolphins subterfuge; so the fact he's saying that he doesn't believe for a minute that Miami is not picking Jake, but rather Chris Long (I agree with him, btw) tells us that teams are not buying the Dolphins' tales.

So, what would everyone say if the Dolphins actually do draft Jake Long? I'd like to see a post-draft blog/story about all of the predictions and peoples reactions.

IMO Dolphins are going(should)to go offensive line(1st rd)Jake Long, defensive line/linebacker(2nd)Quinton Groves, CB(2nd)Brandon Flowers, LB(3rd)Tavares Gooden. Thats it for the first day. Bottom line the phins have a lot of need in just about every area, to include RB due to the injuries to both Brown and Williams. Ideally they can find a trade partner for more 1st and second day pics but to drop from 1 to 8 and only get a second doesnt equal out according to the value chart. Now what "MAY" happen is Atlanta could trade up from the 2 spot and just give up a second. That's a more likely scenerio if a trade were to happen as Atlanta would get the player they want and only give up one of their three 2nd round picks.

I've cracked the Parcells Code! Here is how the Dolphins Draft will go

1. Pick the guy with the best family

2a Trade for A.J. Feely back.

2b Trade for Daunte Culpepper back.

3. Choose the RB with the most character issues to continue the Sammie Smith/Lawrence Phillips/Cecil Collins/Ricky Williams Traditions.

4. Provide the pick the Carl Peterson for giving us such a great deal on Trent Green.

5. (traded) pick already handed over to Carl Peterson for Trent Green.

6. A Samoan -- we picked about 14 of them last year.

7a. Will Brandon Flowers still be around by this pick?

7b. I suppose we have to pick a Left Tackle sometime right?

"The O line is decimated. And since they're rebuilding it makes sense to take the best LT. "

Anon: I don't know if I completely agree. We need a RT and a guard and some depth.

We have Satele, Carey, and Smiley. It isn't quite "decimated", but it needs work.

I think DE is a Priority. You don't wait until you don't have one to get one. You anticipate Taylor leaving sooner or later.

PLus drafting Chris Long could nest us another pick by making JT available if needed.

But PFT is saying Fins and Jake nearly have a deal in place, but I don't believe it.

It has made sense all along to negotiate with Jake Long (and possibly others before this weekend) if Chris Long is really your guy. I wouldn't be surprised if we start talking to other players this week and leave Chris as the last one we contact. That would give us the best chance of cramming a favorable contract down his throat. If we don't take him he could slide down to no. 5 or worse.

That being said, all it takes is one team like the Rams or Raiders to be in love with Jake enough to give up something to get him. Even sliding down 1-3 spots we can save money and still probably get Chris Long.

Of course, I would be just fine with Jake Long going No. 1, I think it makes a lot of sense- less bust potential than other positions, since "bust" might still mean you get a good RT or OG, which is better than nothing.

Per profootball talk.com the fins are close to finalizing a deal with jake long. the rams may soon be on the clock. I see atlanta trading up to no 1 before the draft as after vick this would put excitement in the atlanta area. Armando i dont think the fins would trade down to 8 unless they get a 2 and 5 this yr at least and a 2 or 3 next yr. I could also see kansas city trying to get in front of the rams and atlanta to pick either ryan or jake long.

For Chris Nelson,

I do realize the OLB is actually the position but I was referring to the Hybrid position that JT and Chris/Vernon would play.

The point is we still need to plan ahead not just draft a player after we lose another, but in anticipation of the loss. Porter probably has only one or two seasons left as a Dolphin as well.

1:40 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It's not going to be much of a hybrid. It's OLB.

It just seems like you have this misconception the position will be like the one JT played in 2005. We ran a hybrid defense then (but more of a 4-3), so JT both stood up and played on the line. But in a pure 3-4 it's going to be an OLB for the most part. And to call the position "defensive end" is just kind of pointless because it's really not. And it also doesn't convey that you just mean "in certain looks."

1:51 PM
Blogger One Angry American said...

You are missing my point, Regardless, JT has to be replaced.

YOu are correct about the misconception based on Saban's true hybrid scheme while this one is more of a pure 3-4. When I said DE, I was really conveying Taylor's replacement.

1:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Ron in Charlotte, you keep saying we can't wait until someone leaves to fill their position, and we need to get JT's replacement now.
OK, how long can we wait to fill a position where we have NO ONE.

Your argument makes no sense. We CAN'T wait to fill OLB b/c JT and Porter are getting old, pay no attention to the TWO huge holes on the OLine.

1:56 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Also, JT was had in the third round. I'd be more than willing to fill his shoes with another physical specimen project, like he was, to groom for when he retires.

I don't want to spend the #1 pick on someone sitting on the bench waiting for JT to get tired.

Blogger One Angry American said...

I agree, but I believe we have three YOUNG OL, and we have nine picks. I think we go for OL in later rounds and develop them. Carey will be fine at LT, in my opinion unless we develop somebody who winds up being better. This draft is much deeper in OL the Pass-rushing DE/OLB. YOu take guys like Gholston and Long early esp with the kind of OL coaching staff we have to develop OL.

but he wont be on the bench. But we need to have someone playing near his level when he goes.

And we still need someone on the other side.

If we would have signed Pace I would think Jake is the guy, but we were willing to pay $20M guaranteed for a one-year wonder like Pace that show you what a priority that position is. The fact that Chris/Vernon are out there is why we didn't match the Jets offer and secure Pace.

Maybe the secret is...there is no secret. Maybe Bill & crew has determined that a good LT is the key to reviving this offense and keeping the defense off the field. And, if Jake Long is the best LT available, then put your efforts into locking him up before the draft. I think that would bring the most credibility to the organization at this point. Not that Bill, himself, gives a spit about credibility...

The Miami Herald: All the news that isn't news.

If Parcells farted in your direction, would the Herald run a blog story debating how the fart reflected the Fins' draft intentions?

People treat Parcells as some divine guru; but not everything he does requires scrutiny or overanalysis. Nor does every attempt by another team's GM to muddle an obvious draft pick require comment.

Ron in Charlotte,

You are a fraud dude!! You came on here the other day, after the GM for the fins spoke, and you claimed they were going to draft Chris Long or Gholston. And I have been telling you from day 1, it is going to be Jake Long. Now that the draft is nearing and you know, as well as the whole world that Jake is indeed going to be the first pick, now you want to act like you are ok with it.

You come on here claiming you know alot and in reality you know NOTHING. You are a fraud for coming on here today and claiming if the pick is Jake you would be OK with it.

For all the dolfans we have a fraud on this site, he talks and talks and talks and thinks he knows everything. But reality is he knows nothing and now that he knows nor Chris Long or Gholston are going to be picked, he is back tracking every word he says.

Mr. know it all, thought he was a mind reader when ireland came out and said " DEFENCE", he took it to heart and ran with it, now he's writing on this blog saying he's ok with Jake Long.

MANDO BAND THIS FRAUD FOR GOOD!!!

YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT!!! NOW MAN UP AND ADMIT YOU A FRAUD WITH A TIE AND SUIT!!

The team has not made any effort in signing any O-Line free agents. Last years line was the worst ever, no qb would succeed behind it. Our strength this year will be our running game JLong is awesome on either side for RB blocking, and I don?t buy he is only a NFL RT he had two outstanding years as LG against quality opposition. The improved running game will allow Beck, who had one of NCAA highest completion percentages, time to throw against a secondary that has their safeties on mostly run protection. Its Jake Long people.
