What are your questions for Jeff Ireland?

General Manager Jeff Ireland will talk to the media about the draft Thursday.

This will be the last time the organization is scheduled to discuss draft matters publicly before the April 26-27 selections.

Soooo.

What do you want to know?

Tell me what questions you have for Ireland. I just might add the good ones to my list of questions.

Oh, by the way, don't bother asking, "Who are you going to pick?" I've already asked that and didn't get much of an answer.

WILL THE SHORTENED TIME BETWEEN PICKS THIS YEAR HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THEIR NORMAL ROUTINE?

WOULD YOU RATHER TAKE A FREAKISH ATHLETE WITH UNLIMITED UPSIDE AND POTENTIAL BUT WITH A LOW FOOTBALL IQ OR AN OVERACHIEVING "LESS GIFTED" PLAYER WITH REALLY HIGH FOOTBALL IQ?

MR IRELAND, ARE YOU PREPARED TO FACE THE WRATH OF THE FANS IF YOU DECIDE TO TRADE JASON TAYLOR ON DRAFT DAY?

Would they consider passing on the pick and sending in the card later to get a better deal?

Do you have a specific player in mind or do you have several players graded equally at the top of the draft board?

As a team with the first overall pick, do you think a rookie salary-cap is a good idea, and if so, how soon do you think the league will dialogue the idea?

Ask him if there is a difference in the bill parcells as a cowboys coach and as a dolphins vp in attitude, dedication, beliefs and hours put into the team, is he the same bill, and has the owner move affected bill and the team at all.

Gholston is a major impact player, and Bill likes defensive players that can disrupt change the way a offense prepares for his team. Wouldn't Gohlston be the ideal player for the 3-4 scheme? We may be sorry for passing on him and letting a team in our division take him instead. Also we can get o-line help later rounds, Jake Long is good but there are questions about duarability.

Mando,

You rock!

A few questions I have
1) What is the deadline for Jake to accept Miami's offer
2) If that deadline passes without a deal, do Miami still take Long?
3) If not, who is next in line for negotiations?
4) Is Miami planning to take a QB in the first few rounds? What about the later rounds as a project QB? Someone like Colt Brennan or Josh Johnson?
5) Last one since I don't wanna take up too much time on your blog :) What is going on with JT? Is he going to be dealt? Which team(s) if any has shown interest

That's it from me! Thanks Mando!

Who makes the final decision if the trifecta differ in their opinion of who to draft? Will the 'Fins draft based on need or the best player available, particularly in rounds 2 and 3? Has Beck progressed w/ trying to throw with a more "over the top" type of motion? How are Ronnie & Ricky progressing w/ their injuries? And most importantly, Who is Armando's source?

Its about time for an official statement and an apology to the fans!!!

Apologize to the fans about what?

Releasing an aging linebacker with neck and concussion issues who had a large cap number?

Not to mention it was an amicable split and both sides had no hard feelings and recognized the reality of the NFL being a business where tough decisions need to be sometimes made?

Ok, why don't you wait outside, I believe they will release an official apology this afternoon in one of the parking lots.

Mando Ask him this,

1. What has he seen in John Beck during the off season, that tells the organization (this is our guy for years to come).

2. How are the rehabs going for Ronnie, Ricky and Y. Bell, and will they be ready for training camp.

5:44 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

In the second round, you have two picks. With those two picks will you draft for need or will you draft for the best talented player?

5:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since no team seems interested in trading for the #1 spot, would you consider drafting Darren McFadden in hopes of enticing another team that was thinking they could get him a few spots lower to trade for him? (Kinda like what the Chargers did a few years ago when they drafted Eli Manning first overall.)

5:50 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ask him if need comes into the equation at all or if the team's really going to stick with the best player available? I think need has to be part of the equation when you're talking about our oline. We need a tackle and guard minimum.

5:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It seems there is a consensus among coaches that John Beck is one of, if not the hardest working athletes on our team. Will his hard work translate into a success during a two-minute drill?

Also, where was John Beck on your draft board last year? Overall and among qbs.

O,

I suppose having us fish folks give you all the food you need to ask questions is easier then figuring it yourself. Heck, maybe you need us because you're slipping and can't ask the good questions anymore... Either way you're in the room and are offering. Obviously the biggest question is

Are the dolphins negotiating with any other players besides J.Long?
If so, whom?

6:04 PM
Blogger Solomon said...

Mr. Ireland,
Does the organization feel pressure to draft players that will contribute immediately instead of investing in players that need to develop before they can make an impact in the league?

7:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

-How do you think John Beck compares to this year's draft class at QB, and where do you think you'd place him amongst them?

-How worried are you about Ronnie Brown's injury, and how much would it affect how we draft? Or can you rely on him, Williams, and Booker enough for RB to fall far in terms of need at the position?

7:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two questions:
First what does he think of all us armchair GM`s?
Second who would buy ? KC or Atlanta when we draft Jake first and want a second and their first pick. That way the worst we`re into is having our most dire need covered and having to pay at worst the going #1 rate. The best scenereo gets us an outstanding Defensive player and an extera second rounder.

-Explain the differences, if any, in how your previous draft preparations have differed from this one (now that you have final say)

-How many players in total are on your entire draft board?

Why are the Dolphins only talking contract with J. Long? Do they have a trade worked out if J. Long doesn't agree to the contract? Would a player like River's say at the 10th pick be interesting to Parcells?

I have many questions for Mr. Ireland. But will only ask a few here.

Have you and the coaching staff given any thought to taking Dorsey and making him a DE in the 3-4?

Are the medical issues on Dorsey to much to even make it on the Dolphins draft board?

I have heard that You and Mr. Parcell's like to have a really short list for a draft board. How many players make up that list this year? Could you e-mail that to me? haha

Now one for Mondo. When will we see the answers to these questions posted?

Eddie in Dallas.

9:05 PM

Does he intend on playing a 3-4 on defense? Will the draft focus be on Offense or Defense? Any non-Cobine players they have interest in?

1) Jake Long 2A) Justin Keller 2B) James Hardy 3) Cliff Avrill 4) Ahtyba Rubin 6) Jack Ikegwuonu 6) Colt Brennan. Jack & Colt immediately to IR for the year.

Bring Martel Van Zant in for a shot at S.

Got to love Jake Long and Branden Albert but Albert is flying up the chart.

With your relationship with Jerry Jones and working in Dallas, would that help facilitate a trade with them? Has that been discussed?

Are you looking for Defensive guys that will perform in a 3-4 Defense? Or have you decided to stay in a 4-3?

How is the off season workouts going? Who has gotten bigger and stronger? How is the rookie from last year doing in the weight room?

Does Jeff feel he's not being credited for any GM work? Is Bill over shadowing him?

9:30 PM

No other question comes close because it affects the entire future of how NFL matters. Also, it's something he can answer honestly without jeopardizing whatever draft advantage(s) the Dolphins have:

Do you want a rookie-pool determined on your draft slot? If it got passing votes next season, when would it be in affect? (realistically speaking)

9:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Plain and simple

Who have you guys spoken to about the pick? Do you have a contract agreed to and whoever decides to take it will be the number one pick?

Armando,

Given what you have seen of Beck this offseason and the tapes from last season, if he were available in this draft and all we had was McCown, where you think he would land, ie. First round pick, second round, etc. Would you pick him with our 1st second round pick?

#2. Obviously you are open to trade the 1st pick of the draft, but how open are you to trade another pick or to trade up in order to get someone you really want?

#3. Where do you see Lorenzo Booker filling in a role this year? 3rd down back, slot receiver? Kickoff returns? What about Ginn? Will he still do Punt returns and Kickoff returns and do WR? Is Ginn slated as #1 receiver as of today? If you had to play a game today, is your WR's, #1 Ginn, #2 Wilford, #3 Hagan? Who would fill out the fourth and possible fifth spot?

4. I know you can't speak openly about draft picks or possible trades, but are you open to trade a draft pick for a player on another team that is proven vs. going completely young and keeping all of our picks?

10:37 PM
Blogger Sean said...

With the unconfirmed reports of Jake Long's refusal to play for the Dolphins, are you checking your other options?

10:54 PM
Blogger Steve said...

Armando, PLEASE mention to Jeff Ireland to inform his peers amongst the league to NOT do any dealings with the PATRIOTS. Let them make their pick at #7 and thats it!!!A dynasty like the Pats do not need extra picks for which they could get some luck with as is the case because of those damn 49ers who were so infatuated with Joe Staley, who I am not sure did anything this past season, and as a result the Pats get to add at pick #7 a premier lineman or premier corner to replace A.Samuel.

How true are the rumors such as trading for Jeremy Shockey and/or Lito Sheppard or Keyshawn Johnson coming to the Dolphins?

11:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ask him if he feels any pressure going into this season knowing the fate of Cam and Randy.

Ask him about the schedule, the fact that we only play 3 play off teams this year. Ask him if he feels pressure to win a handful knowing they are playing some of the worst teams in the league this season.

Ask him why I am about to spend 150$ to be able to watch the games up here in central. Wait......errr......

Seriously though, I wanna know how he feels going into this season, coming off of the worst season in franchise history, knowing the previous regimine all got the ax and the 09 schedule is pure fluff.

Jeff, is having the #1 pick in the draft as much fun as you thought it would be? What has this experience been like for you? How has it differed than what you expected?

7:49 AM

In terms of the Offensive Line, how many lineman would you like to carry on the roster when camp opens? And then how many would you ideally keep when the season starts on Sept 7th?

Does Jeff feel any extra pressure to get this draft right, knowing the team is coming off a disasterous 1-15 season? Any extra pressure having the first pick and the financial ramifications that go with that? Any extra pressure seeing that teams need to build through the draft and this is the Dolphins regimes opportunity to make their mark? We're glad they are all on board and look forward to great success under their leadership.

Sorry folks,

People are making up "rumors" about a uniuform change that aren't even real rumors. Face it, it ain't happenning. Unlike teams like the Broncos, Pats, and Bucs, who had no true legacy, the Dolphins Logo is one steeped in pride and tradition. Yes, the uniforms have modernized over the years, but the logo will not be changed significantly. The Fins have already incorporated some navy in the logo.

If you are TRUE fan you don't want a new logo. The Dolphins logo is known and loved Worldwide. Why do you think we keep getting international games? The world loved Marino and loves the Dolphins. This logo is sacred. How dare you ask for a new one.

Many of us would be crushed if that ever happened.

That being said, I wish we wore an alternate jersey like the orange one or a navy blue jersey once in a while. I am cool with that, but th Pack Cowboys and Bears won't change their logos. Why? Because they have history. Their uniforms are a legacy. Same with Miami.

Anyone who watched this press conference knows two things:

A.) Armando thankfully didn't ask any of the stupid questions

B.) The Dolphins are drafting Gholston or Chris Long, it appears to be Long, Ireland's slip of the tongue not withstanding.

Also he stressed "Face of the Franchise" for years, gut with excellent make-up, character, etc. It has to be Chris Long.

1:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree completely Ron.

They ARE picking Chris Long. It was a given (I also watched that press conference).

That was a HUGE slip of the tongue. I guess it could be Dorsey he's talking about but I doubt it. C. Long makes all the sense in the world for Miami and I bet they are playing tricks with Jake so that teams will make some noise and they can figure out who wants who. As we just learned, The Saints want Dorsey and are thinking about moving up...

Its going to be very interesting.... I gathered the exact same feeling from that press conference as you did.

This comment is probably too late anyway, and I figure most of the good questions have already been proposed.

Though not important in the scheme of things, I'd be curious to know more about Will Billingsley's story and why he went unsigned for a year after the draft.
