Madden '08 disses Jason Taylor

Taking a lighthearted view of the NFL today, I was scrolling through the list of 1,721 NFL players rated by the Madden '08 video game.

The ratings take into account such attributes as speed, acceleration, strength, agility, awareness, stamina, toughness and even ego. Importance to his team is also rated by the game, with those ratings coming from a group of game experts that most notably includes John Madden himself.

Anyway, Brian Urlacher is the highest rated player in the game with Champ Bailey, LaDainian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning and Ed Reed rounding out the top 5.

So I'm scrolling through to find players from YOUR Miami Dolphins...

Scrollling...

Still scrolling. And then I finally, finally come to Zach Thomas at No. 23. I'm not kidding. No. 23, behind guys like Adam Vinatieri and Shane Lechler and Lorenzo Neal.

And if that's not strange enough, I scroll back up to find Jason Taylor, you know the NFL defensive player of the year in 2007, and he's nowhere to be found. So I scroll back down and then find Taylor.

He's rated at No. 49. Behind Denver kicker Jason Elam.

Are they kidding me?

Anyway, Joey Porter is ranked No. 54 and then Miami doesn't have another player ranked in the top 100. Chris Chambers is ranked No. 266 and Ronnie Brown is at 267.

Now understand this is just a video game. It's a fun exercise. But it makes the point the opinion that so-called experts, such as Madden himself, have of the Dolphins. As far as talent is concerned the team is not exactly, shall we say, loaded.

Of course football is a team, not individual sport. So maybe the Dolphins can surprise some people this year. At least on the field, if not in the video game.

Those ratings are not reflective of the players overall ability. Just because a kicker is a 99 does not mean he is better than Jason Taylor. It means that the kicker is the best kicker in the game. I bet if you went through the ratings you would not find a higher rated defensive end than jason taylor.

I always thought Madden was a little senile. It's either that or no Dolphin player is popular among the masses because they're never on national TV and never make it to the playoffs. I suspect it's more of the latter.

Mando,

While you were playing footsie with John Madden and attending the dog fights, the Miami Dolphins (Palestinians?) were not missing another opportunity to miss an opportunity?

Why were the Dolphins not in on the Pete Kendall trade? Why did the Redskins get him? More importantly, why were you asleep at the wheel when all this transpired?

Another late night at Twist? You did look cute in that purple flourescent shirt, I concede.

the whole point to Madden is building up your team. I'm still playing Madden 05 and am in my 21st season. Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas are LONGGGGGGG gone. I built my team by stockpiling picks by trading my aging stars...Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, etc.

Most of us are the biggest sheep to EA Sports, because we line up EVERY YEAR to buy Madden. Some years, the differences are minor. EA should allow me to update my 2005 game with current rosters....a small fee would be fine. I didn't like the change from Xbox to Xbox360 in terms of Madden and the gameplay. eh, what are you gonna do.

I don't care if Madden "disses" Taylor. We all know he's a monster in real life and that pretty much all I care about.

Pete Kendall has indeed been traded to the Redskins. There is a story by me on the situation at miamiherald.com

Come on DOLFANS do you actually think that the NY Jets would trade to us a DIVISION RIVAL.....Please I know that we are smarter than that. The Dolphins where waiting for he to be released, its just to bad that he wasn't.

If you change his position to defensive end he becomes a 99. Enough said.

That fat saw has never made a positive comment about Miami. I recalled his Monday night games when Marino was still in uniform; again, he grudgingly would make some mediocre positive comments about the great quarter back, but not like the way he raves about the others. He even had the temerity to comment on Shula’s influence over the NFL leading to the speculation that that the greatest coach in history who transformed the game was receiving favoritism from the refs. That fat saw forgot about the brakes he got, by those so called scared to death by Shula refs, in that luckiest of playoff games in 74 that ended with the infamous hurdle from Stabler to Davis. I saw that play on black and white and never forgot how that fat saw was undulating on the field after the game. As a franchise, we never truly recovered since AD 1974. That is why I can’t stand the fat saw.

Oh my god, I use to put up with Armando's sorry blogs because I thought he at least liked the Dolphins, but when he referred to the Dolphins as "Your" Miami Dolphins and not "Our" Dolphins I finally saw the light. Armando I cannot bite my tongue anymore, your articles or blogs or anything you write about is garbage. I guess sorry people can slide through the cracks and can get lucky and get a good job. Don't worry Armando you can't hide your lack of skills for too much longer.

Dear Anonymous: Thanks for reading MY blog.
I've addressed the reason I write YOUR Miami Dolphins before. As the daddy tomato said the baby tomato as they ran around the tomato garden: Catchup.

John Madden has little to do anymore with the game that bears his name, including rating players beyond the handful he chooses to do. The next-gen games don't even carry his commentary anymore.

I will not buy Madden anymore because he is a jackass. He should have rated Taylor in the top 10.

I saw the 08 kickoff special on NFL network and Madden was def. a part of it. He sits down with the game techs for hours working on how good the players should be and what is beyond their ability.

Maybe Shula should start his own gaming?

Experts? Please. You know who makes these games? Stoned college grads who know how to program computers.

They know squat about football. Play the game. You'll understand.

EA sports sucks.

I long for the day when 2k sports can make NFL games again. They make much better sports games.

That's alright...not even did they diss Jason Taylor on his rating but they dissed his position. His listed as a ROLB..that's right LB!!! Unbelievable! I know he can play the position, but don't take the RE away from him..that's just not right! Anyway, they don't give our team credit because we're not the New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers or Da Bears or Super Bowl champ Colts. I like being the under dog in my opinion, one day we'll prove everyone wrong about how good this team can actually be. We got youth and we're getting better with speed. We'll be alright!

Armando,

Honestly, as much as JT gets dissed in Madden `08, I have lost only one game playing as MY Dolphins, and I don't even own the game. That said, every time I line JT up at ROLB, I average @ least 2 sacks a game with him and 12 total on all-madden (vs. another person...never really played vs. the CPU) Not to mention that I've tossed long balls to ginn, hagan, chambers, and hakim...but then, I do use booker almost exclusively as a possession receiver. Regardless, I know it's just a game....Still, when Green gets hurt, I skip Lemon and drop Green in...read in what you will...

Uh. the dolphins are 0-8 so why would you expect them to be recognized on t.v. or a video game. I suggest that if you want your team to be popular find a new team, otherwise just love them the way the are and don't worry about their stats on a game.
