More news about the coaching search

The Dolphins search for a new head coach has met its first road block.

According to a source, the Dolphins asked for and received permission to interview Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley today. But something happened on the way to Haley's head coaching interview.

The Cardinals offered their assistant a contract extension with a raise. And Haley took it. He has told the Dolphins, "Thank you, but no thank you."

Meanwhile, Rex Ryan who flew in today for his interview is already on his way out of town. That interview was interesting because, unlike the Leslie Frazier interview, it did not last two days.

Ryan was in and out.

Much as Frazier did, Ryan said he was painfully truthful with the Dolphins about their current state. "Bill [Parcells] has his hands full," Ryan said.

That statement is interesting coming from a coach on the only team the Dolphins beat in 2007.

Yeah what in the hell is Ryan talking about?! His defense is getting old, they have no PROVEN QB, they have no head coach, and their recent drafts have been poor. Sounds exactly like the Miami Dolphins doesn't it? A few big differences. The Dolphins players NEVER bad mouthed their coach to the media and they never yelled at the coach on the sideline in anger. The Ravens were also supposed to be fighting for a spot in the afc championship and totally underacheived. Everyone already knew the Dolphins weren't going anywhere and they have already started to rebuild while the Ravens have not.Seems like the Ravens have more problems than the Dolphins if you ask me. I think Ryan just has a big ego and doesn't like the idea of working for Parcells. Two big egos can not survive together so it's probably better if he doesn't come aboard. NYSCOTT

Hi Armando, Thanks for your on-going great work.

I've been thinking a lot about this Sparano phenomenon and I'm concerned. I know his name has been thrust at us a lot because, well....that's who your sources are telling you is the front runner. I'm just really perturbed that someone with no head coaching experience but who is "famililar" to Parcells can receive so much hype and really become the "fan favorite" so quickly. I guess it makes sense for Parcells to hire a no-name so that if the Dolphins do well Parcells will receive the credit/glory...if the Dolphins fail, well he can blame the head coach. Suppose we hired Cowher - Parcells would get less of the glory if we won and more of the blame if we lost.
To look at it another way - what head coach with an already established reputation (e.g.Billick, Cowher etc.)would want to come to work 'under' Bill Parcells. There's just not enough spot-light to go around to feed the egos. So I feel we are destined for a no-name head coach...which in my view is a step down from when we hired Cam Cameron...wouldn't you say on paper he had a better pedigree??

Anyway..something maybe worth exploring in one of your blogs.

Enjoy your work tremendously,
Rob

Screw Rex Ryan....

His team went 13-3 last season....

Then stunk up the joint this year and allowed our hapless Fins to beat them.

Don't let the door hit your on your fat ass on the way out.

By the way, good job calling the time out that preserved New England's perfect season.

Beat it, Rex!

I am of the opinion that if Schnellenberger was interviewed it would solve everything. Him being a senior citizen would cover the Roone Rule. What would Carson think about that? Now in the same token I believe Wayne did abide by hiring Parcells since he too is a senior. Why do we keep ignoring this important and fastly growing part of the community.

God you are a dunce... Where have you been? I guess you managed to miss Taylor's and Holiday's ripping on the coach and GM?? before he even coached game 1!! on the damn radio no less! Traylors hissy fit on the sideline?? Joey Porter's screaming at the coach, calling him a gutless coward in front of the whole team? and the rest of the team laughing? Please... I love my team, but this is a joke! I know everybody needs to blame the coach for everything. Regardless on how you think the coach did, nobody deserves that, especially a coach. Look at some of the coaches and players here? how they were treated before they quit. This team really needs major gutting. Especially with the players..

I agree, get those undiciplined players out of here ASAP. We need players that do what they are told not what they think is right. Thats how wars are lost.

Of course it's an ego trip! If a head coach does not have a huge ego driven "A" personality he will never make it in the NFL. The job demands a personality that will not back down to millionaire athletes and billionaire owners. That was probably Cameron's biggest weakness. He was not a mean enough SOB to motivate his players and make decisive decisions.

Parcells is no dummy, we can expect to see a tough, egotistical, mean SOB as the next coach of The Dolphins. I think that is exactly what we need. Take a good look at Sparano and tell me you don't see a young Bill Cowher?

I believe a few of the posters here place too high of a value on the "ego trip" being such a driving force behind who the Dolphins' choose as their next Head Coach. I'm sure it is part of the decision process (on both ends, the future hire and Parcells). However, I don't think it is THE deciding factor. I'm sure their Egos make some decisions for them, but these guys are professional business men and they also utilize logic, knowledge, current trends, inside sources, intuition, and familiarity to assist them in their decision making processes. You guys act like their lead guitarists in rock bands high on cocaine. It's a business, not American Idol. NYJeff

Mando,
One Parcells took the President of Ops, all pretense of an objective coaching search ended. It will be Sparano. Ryan, Frazier and anyone else coming through the door better not let it hit 'em on the way out because its going to be Bill's guy and these guys are just sacrificial protocol lambs.
Sorry thats just the way it is. If Sparano loses 7 or 8 of first 10 games, there will be Tuna on the sidelines - I guarantee that. You are what you are, Bill - a coach. Welcome to Bill's mondo, Mando.

my god!!!!

what the heck is wrong with some of you people? what was ryan supposed to say....."gee mr parcells, this is realy a great team and i can take it right to the superbowl if you let me".....

isnt that what got cam fired? didnt cam, day one, tell huizenga he saw a playoff team and he could take us there? how did that turn out?

sounds like a bunch of jet fans some times. soon as someone says anything precievably wrong with there team, they turn into a pack of wolves!!

isnt what rex said true? this team is AWFUL and DOES have a long ways to go. bill parcells DOES have his hands full and this is going to be far and away his biggest challenge to date. and i wouldnt want to bet either way!

dont you want a coach who is a straight shooter and gets whats really going on instead of wandering around with blinders on and tellig the media EVERY WEEK how "we will get it fixed, the unit needs time to gell", etc....

you think rex ryan doesnt know that tony soprano is not already the finz head coach? even my wifes hairdresser knows this so why hang around 5 days and wait for other jobs to close?

and besides, fraizer was in town longer by the dolphins doings, so it looked like they really had an interest and he wasnt a token.

get a grip folks and stop acting like fireman mike in ny. rex ryan spoke the truth.

and PS: if brian billik decides to give his rb the ball at the half yard line, "rex ryan" isnt the only guy to lose to the finz.

i would take ryans defense last year over ours any day!!!!

I agree NYJeff, ego may be the wrong word. Probably extremely self confident would be a better way to decribe the personality trait. A head coach certainly cannot be a lamb, which judging by some of the comments I read from Jay Glazer, that's exactly what Cameron was.

Hey Giuliani, when did you fall in love with Ryan? I think the point was that men who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Well Ryan certainly lives in a glass house doesn't he, so why is he throwing stones. People are reacting to the fact that Ryan came in here and left so quickly. And from what we read it sounded like the interview wasn't really an interview but a way for Ryan to make fun of the team that beat him. He showed little interest in the position so why did he interview. Who goes into an interview and tells there possible employer how bad his company is and then leaves early? The guys a jackass as was his Father so stop trying to make him sound like a genius because he told Parcells something everyone already knows.RYAN-->" Umm Bill, this team sucks and you have your hands full".Bill--> "Yeah, no s**t dumbass, now tell us something about what you can do to change it".

Anonymous. First of all way to start your post with name calling. You know, it IS possible to have a difference of opinion without calling someone names. It's what adults do. Second, what did Taylor and Holliday say about Cam that was so bad? On the radio?! HAHAHAHA, who cares, I was talking about the Ravens ripping their coach on national tv in front of millions of viewers and you're talking about some cheesy radio show that only airs in Miami. When did Taylor or Holliday rip Cam on ESPN? THEY NEVER DID. THIRD, "Traylors hissy fit on the sideline"? Didn't see it did you? Because they didn't show it on tv so were you at the game or did you just read something second hand? 4th, Joey Porter called Cam a gutless coward? Hmmmmmmmmm, I heard there was a disagreement over the handling of the plane incident but that was it. You made that up because unless you were in the locker room you couldn't know exactly what was said. You completely missed the point of my post. I was stating how Cam had our entire team more together than Ryans defense was. I watched Lewis question Billicks play calling and call out his qb on national tv. Never once saw JT or Zach do that to Cam on an espn interview. I watched a d-back for Baltimore run into the face of Billick on the sideline and chest bump him on national tv. Is that what Traylor did? I don't think so. I was sticking up for our team against someone (who was bad mouthing us) from another team that is no better. For that you call me a dunce? Read the posts a couple of times before commenting, that may help you to better understand. NYScott

Personally I prefer a Defensive Coach as the HC over an Offensive Coordinator any day. I think they bring more to the table and demand more from there players. I would take Rex Ryan or Leslie Frazier any day over an offensive guy.

I just want a guy that can make these guys play. I will let Parcells alone until we go 1-15 again.
Then I will turn on him just like I did with Mueller and Cameron. If they go 6 and 10 year it is a leap up.
Get a guy that recognizes talent and uses it. Get a guy without an ego, because ego's get in the way of making great decisions. A guy without a huge ego would also get a lot more respect. Walk softly and carry a big stick.
I really don't think that Bellicheck has a huge ego. No dressing up. He doesn't really lose his temper. He know how to recognize talent and gets the best from each player. That is a coach. I hate New England but you have to respect what they have done.

Since you have detailed knowledge of all that was addressed in the interview, could you share it with the rest of us? How do you know he didn't have suggestions to "change it".

Glass house?...We (The Ravens) are nowhere near a glass house, at least not as implied by your post. We had a bad year! You won the game - props to you! But let's not blow it out of proportion, here. You won against what was basically our reserves. Half of our starters were either on the IR, or missed half the season due to injuries. There is no comparison to be made here...it came down to a missed field goal in OT (led by our rookie QB, who had only one series of snaps in an NFL game prior to this). No Chris McAlister; no Samare Rolle; no Todd Heap; Trevor Pryce; Ray Lewis (most of the 2nd half); Steve McNair; Demetrius Williams; Daniel Wilcox (we were down to our last tight-end); down to our 3rd string (rookie) QB Troy Smith...get the picture?

GLASS HOUSE MY A$$ - or is that still too much honesty for you!

Maybe this is why you were referred to as a "dunce"...WHO CARES whether it was national tv, or not? Lack of discipline is lack of discipline. Both teams share this problem and defending it because you want to qualify one as being more of an issue, for your convenience, is not going to make it any less of a problem - especially, when it costs you "W"s.

Maybe, when you get more national games (which, I'm sure will happen now that you have the "Big Tuna" in the fold) and see your own players (my money is on Porter) acting in this manner, and costing you in the process...you'll understand.

Again, lack of discipline is lack of discipline no matter what stage you're on, or uniform you wear...IT'S ALL BAD!!!

Armando,

I'll admit that I'm not familiar with your posts. So let me ask you: Is this the norm? Do you always rip on a guy for sharing what was his honest opinion, by throwing a childish cheap-shot?

Rex was asked a question about what was said behind closed doors, and instead of dancing around with a pretty answer (or a "no comment"), he gave an answer you don't like...so, essentially, your reaction is equal to pouting, calling him a "boopey-head" and taking your ball away.

Sad.

Good luck with that attitude when dealing with "Big Tuna".

Why is a Raven's fan trolling a Miami Dolphins blog? Get over it fag! Just to set the record straight though; since you want to throw out excuses. We were playing without our starting QB, RB, WR, MLB, OLB, CB, FS, SS, we were on our 6th and 7th safties, 3rd QB, 3rd and 4th HB, and more. So, while you might have had significant injuries, so did we! Granted, you should have won the game, but you should have beaten the Pats too...Thank Rex for that one! My point is, stop cryin' like a sissy on a Dolphins blog and get a life.

Ravens West: if the reason your team lost to Miami was because youu were down to your 2nd stringers, damn how does that compare to our, The Dolphins, playing this game with some 5th stringers. Wow!...Fag??!!...Wow!!!

Marc,

I was directed here by another site while checking the progress of Rex Ryan's coaching interviews. I saw him being attacked for a statement which was used (maybe out of context; maybe not) as a tag-line by a writer trying to be cute, but also trying to stir the pot a little - that's his job; it worked.

I felt the need to defend "my boy". I'd expect the same from Dolphin fans in the same situation - and believe me, the Baltimore Sun's writers are just as sickening.

I was not aware of the exclusivity of your club, here. No one checked my credentials at the door, so I was under the assumption I was welcome to post my opinion freely (as we are still allowed to do, here on the left coast), and since I was not blocked from doing so.

I AM NOT HERE TO DIS' THE DOLPHINS. I only react to being dis'd.

I DO have a life, which is why I rarely post on anyone's blog (no insult intended to anyone who does).

So, my lil' fairy, stop your name-calling; freshen your makeup (sounds like your mascara's running); and straighten your tu-tu. No need to keep your panties in a bunch, I'm leaving, now.

But, know I'll miss you most of all...

NCFINFAN,

Point taken. Maybe there was some "glass" in the house (as in mirrored season). By the way, we were way deeper than 2nd string on both sides of the ball.

But, that aside, your reserves beat our reserves - straight-up.
