Quickie update on free agent Calvin Pace

OK people this is what I've come up with so far this morning on Calvin Pace.

He is still searching, hoping, waiting for that magic $20 million guaranteed money figure from either the Jets or Dolphins and apparently NEITHER team is there yet.

Amazing that a guy who's had one good year can expect, and perhaps get, that kind of money. But I digress.

Because the money isn't quite where Pace hoped yet, his agent is trying to play one team against the other and including the possibility of adding another team in the mix: The Cincinnati Bengals. But don't worry about the Bengals because they don't traditionally overpay.

Pace is also said to be mulling lifestyle issues. He loved South Florida's weather and was impressed when he met Bill Parcells. He's a Detroit native but lives in Atlanta so he also likes the idea of being closer to home.

On the other hand, I'm told Pace doesn't shy away from attention so playing in the spotlight otherwise known as New York is attractive. But that is all secondary.

It's about the money, people. When either the Jets or Dolphins reach that $20 million guaranteed figure, or surpass it, then that's when Pace will jump. That has not happened yet.

Can't blame him for trying, but as we sign people his offer may dry up. I think he should sign now so we can move since Free Agency has just begun. The money dwindles every day. Don't think for a second Tuna won't move on!

I hope we don't over pay for this guy. He seems like a bum

ASnd we re-signed Yeremiah to a one-year deal. I am glad. I hope he heals up and pans out!

We'll see what happens w/ Pace. Also, it appears we'll have Yeremiah Bell for this year, as he'signed a 1 year deal. Also, Parcells is in hot water w/ the league for requesting video of every Matt Ryan throw from the '07 season from BC's athletic dept. This is apparently completely against league rules.

I don't think he's worth that much money. He had one good season and now he's demanding top dollar. Let's not forget that the Dolphins still have J.T. and Joey Porter. So why sign another pass rusher?

AND WE ARE SWEATING THIS GUY BECAUSE?... IM MORE CONCERNED WITH CORNERBACK AND SAFTEY, I REALLY LIKE TORBER, PACE WOULD BE A NICE LIFT BUT 20 MILLION? C'MON LINEBACKERS ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS THEIR D-LINE IN FRONT OF THEM.

THIS WOULD BE MY DRAFT (DAY ONE):
1. CHRIS LONG OR VERNON GHOLSTON
2. ANTOINE CASON OR AQIB TALIB
3. FRED DAVIS OR XAVIER ADIBI
3. EDDIE ROYAL OR TARVARES GOODEN
4. OFFENSIVE LINE HELP

eddie royal looked amazing at the combine, we need a playmaking tight end BAD! lito sheppard anyone?....

I'd still like to have Pace. The guy is YOUNG, and his "one good year" was when the Cards switched to a 3-4. Hello! That's what we want to run! Sign him, and off Joey Porter!

Glad to see Bell is coming back! He's earned a shot at least.

So why is it against the rules to request video on a player? That seems odd to me...can anyone confirm this rule? Where did you read this story?

1:39 PM
Blogger JinVA said...

OH...and Armando...THANK YOU for keeping us up to date!

JinVA,

Martin pulled that from PFT.

Blogger One Angry American said...

And honestly, I don't know if Tuna made that request, but how convenient that that info got out. Seems like somebody wants to create an illusion that we may want to draft this guy. Tuna is a master manipulator

1:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, Parcells did request that info according to Peter King @ SI. I have yet to read or hear anyone say that there is something wrong with that. Why is it illegal to get tapes of a college player? Didn't Cameron do that with Beck last year? I think we need some clarification / fact checking on that.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

also, I don't know how masterful it is. Everyone see's right through him. He's tried the misinformation gig maybe a few to many times.

1:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Somebody tell this guy that there is a state and city tax in NY which nets him 10% more with the 'Fins deal.

1:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The reason there is so much interest in Pace, is because he's the only real "hybrid DE/LB" at 270 lbs available in FA. Having an experinced guy like that is crucial to successfully implementing a 3-4 scheme. Plus it's obvious they want to draft Jake Long, as there's not much Available in FA at LT. Hence the smoke about Ryan and the desire to sign Pace.

Anonymous re: State Tax.

Actually he would be paying NJ tax on that pay, but the way it works is that you are taxed a prorated amount every time you play a road game in that particular state. So MIami players have to pay NJ state taxes when goung to play the Jets. I don;t believe it works out to 1/16th for each game, but it is 1/16th of a set percentage of the whole salary, but is close to 1/16th. It is still advantasge for half the year, but not as much as you would think. Now endorsements are a whole diferent deal. That's a huge savings!

Re: Peter King:

So what if PeterKing says it? That doesn't mean it happened. These are REPORTERS, and they report what they are told. Sometimes they are given misinformation to manipulate others. We just don't know. That's all I am saying.

By the way I am a tax professional and have actually had professional athletes as clients but none currently.

i think the problem about asking for tape was the fact that he went to the college level to ask for it... im sure that if he just would have had a grunt go through the BC games and cut and edit (althought a lengthy process) there would probably be less debate or any questions upon it.... also if he is found guilty what would be the penalty?

There is no way Pace gets 20 million. How much did Briggs get for resigning with the Bears? 16 million? Briggs is a versitile player and would flurish in the 3-4 as he has in the 4-3 and he has been consistent thoughout his career. He was the one to recieve 20 million not Pace. Pace should recieve no more then 11 to 14 million in g. money bottom line

2:13 PM

Martini,

You really should quote your source when posting info found on another site.

2:24 PM
Blogger One Angry American said...

Pace's salary is not dictated by Briggs. Briggs is weak-side Tampa-2 LB, pace is a hybrid 3-4 defensive end. It's all about team need, the avalibility of that type of player, and how bad you want to keep thast guy away from your division rival. That's the nature of FA. Hybrid 3-4 DE/LB specialists are not commonly available. Cover 2 LB's are a dime a dozen, you just need a badass pass rushing DE.

Now he may not be worth $20M guaranteed, but my point is it cannot be based on Briggs, but that may factor in in a very minor way.

I'm not saying Peter King is god or anything, but he stated it in his "Monday Morning Quarterback" as a fact. I can't remember ever really reading anything in that column that turned out to be a rumor.

2:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, I'm sorry. Was it wrong of me to contact Peter King and the league about Bill's request for Matt Ryan game film from Boston College?

2:34 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

for those interested, heres what he said:

" I think you shouldn't make too much of this, but Bill Parcells, czar of the Dolphins, holder of the first pick in the draft, called Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski the other day and requested video of every one of quarterback Matt Ryan's 654 passes last fall. I still say Ryan at No. 3, to Atlanta, makes the most sense."

and thats all he said...nothing about it being wrong (not saying it isn't...I really don't know)

PFT reported when referencing PK's article that his (PFT's) source said the athe league has issued written memo's regarding this.

Ron in Charlotte,

I'm no tax professional, but your prorated definition of the tax laws don't make sense to me. If the player is a "resident" of the state of Florida, he pays no state tax. That is why MANY professional athletes choose to have homes in Florida to claim Florida as their state of residence even though they reside elswhere. The military falls under the same rules. For example, I as a Marine am from Florida do not pay state taxes although I reside in Southern California and work in many other states and countries.

Tiger Woods for example "lives" in California, but owns a home in the Orlando area (as do many other professiona athletes)and claims Florida as his state of residence.

Sorry for not listing PFT as the place I saw the Parcells story - I normally try to. Being at work limits my ability to be on here (but doesn't eliminate it). Hey Ron in Charlotte, you're on here a lot and it's tax time... shouldn't you be busy?? Just joking. I wish I wouldn't have already filed my taxes.

Calvin Pace for $20 mil? NEXT!!

2:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

A couple of things. If Pace decides to go to the Jets for the "spotlight" he is fooling himself. I live in NY and I can tell you that the only spotlight that shines on the Jets is the one outside the Giants locker room, in Giants stadium, where the Jets play. Pace had one good season last year and for that he wants the same money as guys who have been to the pro bowl 5 times or more? Let the Jets sign him, we could use the money for other areas of need. Hey aphinsfan, you're right, Armando should at least thank you or something. I know other teams blogs actually provide links to PFT at times and teams like KC actually have a blog guy that posts updated rumors & reports from tons of papers, websites, etc all onto his site. Kind of like one-stop-shopping. Oh Well. We can live with Armando. And Armando, we obviously appreciate you and your info, or we wouldn't come for news.

6 years $42 million? That's about what JT makes and it's 9 million more then what LANCE BRIGGS got. $20 million in guarenteed money! He's a nice player, but I'm not sure he's worth that. It'll be interesting to see where Miami goes from here.

i have notice that nothing has been mentioned about ian gold.. I think he was pretty good in denver and I just read that the jets just signed pace...whooopi du......do you guys think we should go after the freak... even though he is getting old but we use him to mold chris long if we draft him.

3:24 PM
Blogger One Angry American said...

Wow $20M signing bonus? They can have him. The Jets are spending like crazy. They must be anticipatin an uncapped year in 2010. Because while this good for them now, they are going to regret this in one or two years...They don't even have a QB...

IN three years we will be taking this division over and the JETS will have to rebuild and the Pats will be on the downturn. I love it...

You can buty your ARSE Chris Long is the number one pick now if we keep it!

3:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

22 guaranteed (20 signing bonus + 2 in other guarantees)!

the jets either think this guy is gonna be a star or are wasting their money.

what other options do the fins have?

wow..... now does pace signing w/ jets mean we will smoke the skirt of ATL finally trade down and get chris long?

Jets are looking good in FA. I predict they will look good in 08. They are signing D. Woody today too and are looking to trade for D. Hall from the Falcons or L. Sheppard from the Eagles

3:40 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Jets are spending a lot but is the quality there to justify it? Damien Woody? C'mon...Ask the Lions what they think of him. No way he can play right tackle effectively. Free Agency is typically a waste of money. Look at the 'success' of the Dolphins over the years in that regard. Busts all over the place.

I agree, save the 6yr $60 million with $30 million guaranteed contract for Chris Long instead!

it's good to know the latest regime change is an actual change in that they're not going to throw money away just to outbid another team. smart move in letting Pace get away; there's no way he was worth what the Jets just dished out.

Looks to me tannenbaum/mangin are sacrificing the lont term good of the Jets to save their asses...

WHat idiot would bring in Damien Woody for a visit. They are diots if they offer him anything

LETTER to JETS Fans:

HA HA. Your management, who is scare of losing their jobs this year, and rightfully so, just mortgaged the future of this club to try and win now. Unfortunately, while NE, SD, and INdy are peaking. You have no chanve to win the SB in the next two years yet you put yourself in terrible future cap position by spending over a $110M or os on OL DL in two days, and in four years, Pace will be all you have to show for it and probably not even onew division title. And three years from now you will have to rebuild because Tannenbaum tries to save his job this year. All that money and no QB...pathetic. You should be pissed.

Vilma wasn't the problem. NO true NT is the problem. Practically gave a way an elite LB because your moron coach can't figure out how to use him. ANd Kris Jenkins at NT? I am not a Panther fan, but I live here in Charlotte, and that was a bad move for a 3-4 defense.

I am obviously not a JETS fan, but I will say as a JET hater, I could not be happier than I am today. And you shouldn't be happy at all! Unless Manning and Brady both blowe a knee in 2008. The you guys do have a chance!
