ESPN: Ricky tests positive again
ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana in April and will not be allowed to reapply for reinstatement from his drug suspension until September.
If this is true, and there is no reason to believe it is not since Mort is usually nails on his reporting, it means Ricky has let everyone -- the Dolphins, his agent, his family and most of all himself -- down again.
It also means Ricky has likely played his final game in Miami, maybe anywhere.
This news shows there was wisdom in the non-commital manner the Dolphins have been answering questions about Ricky. Clearly, the team is in the loop about Ricky's progress (or lack thereof) and if they were aware Ricky fell off the wagon, so to speak, it makes sense they would distance themselves from him or try not get anyone's hopes up about his return.
This news also confirms the Dolphins have been correct with their unstated, yet obvious, policy of never again relying on Ricky because, well, the guy has proven over and over that he cannot be counted on.
Miami made the mistake of counting on Ricky twice in the last three years and got burned each time.
Dave Wannstedt counted on Ricky to be his offense in 2004 and Ricky bolted before the season. Nick Saban counted on Ricky to be a stabilizing force in his backfield last year, a great insurance policy against Ronnie Brown's so-so performances, and sure enough, Ricky wasn't around when his coach and team needed him.
So it is obvious neither general manager Randy Mueller nor coach Cam Cameron are going to allow themselves to depend on Ricky. Ever.
Mueller drafted Lorenzo Booker to be Miami's backup running back. And the man who once dealt Ricky to the Dolphins for two first-round picks is almost certain to take a long-range view of the situation, meaning it's hard to trust a running back longterm when he's nearing his 30th birthday (May 21) and has missed two of the last three seasons.
Cameron, meanwhile, has offered a sobering contrast to the manner in which Nick Saban treated Ricky upon his hiring. Saban called Ricky right away and embraced him. Cameron has made no such reach for Ricky's digits and has doggedly deflected every Ricky question as if it was a plague hurled at his children.
Cameron, in fact, has handled questions about Ricky with a similar aloof style to how he's handled Daunte Culpepper questions. And we all know by now what he intends to do with Daunte once Trent Green is aboard.
It just seems that Cameron's love for predictable goody-goody citizens that are unlikely to give the Dolphins' family a bad name leaves free-spirited, often-weird Ricky out of the picture.
Add to the intrigue the fact Ricky's locker was given away to Booker last week, and you have compelling reasons for believing Ricky's career here is over.

I'm gonna be watching to see how credible you are....you've recieved some negative comments from posters before, and I generally dismiss them...but maybe it's start time to see how good you are at predicting these things.
I was under the assumption that it was like 90/10 (as long as he's passed all of his drug tests) that the league will reinstate him. But perhaps I was mistaken.

Ok here is my prediction. Probably reinstated and probably traded to St. Louis for a seventh.
He will have one decent year and then retire to teach Yoga to dogs.
With Booker on board there is NO RISK to the Dolphins by keeping Ricky. None. There is only upside.
And just remember, Ricky is not a bad person. Never has been. Just eccentric. So Cameron's "character" litmus doesn't apply IMO.
So, I would like to understand the football logic in releasing Ricky or trading him away for a 7th round pick. If you think passing on Quinn was dumb, this would be dumber.
If he doesn't get reinstated, it's not Ricky who's weird, it's the league. I may be crazy, but...it seemed he may have been suspended not for taking illegal drugs but for taking some substance given to him by a yoga teacher. He's been an exemplary citizen. He's obviously not a "bad'' guy. I hope he comes back and contributes. Getting a third-round pick for Williams doesn't seem like a good swap. Maybe a second-rounder.

Why dump Ricky without at least looking at him? When motivated Ricky can play. He's not too old to be a star.

Why get rid of Ricky - what, for table scraps (7th round/6th round pick). The league has no reason to not reinstate him. The NFL is trying to clean up its image but he never beat up anyone, murdered anyone, or got busted with his "hommies trying to put a cap in someone’s head." This guy was not a negative influence to anyone other than to himself - at times. He smoked pot. So what? Heck, at least he didn't get busted making a pot deal.
And as far as trading him, we need an experienced back that can provide some on the field guidance to the younger backs. Ricky is a good teammate. He brings it all the time. We need to keep him.
Same goes for C-Pep, he needs at least a chance to show/prove what he has. I mean he is the team’s property right now, see if he fits, don’t just write him off without a chance. Why just ship him off without an evaluation or compensation from anyone.
With respect to Ronnie, he is not yet the stud we envisioned him to be but he hasn't really had the O-line that some of these other teams have had. I mean look at Denver, I could run behind that line and get about 2-3 yards a carry. The management teams of the past couple of years have dropped the ball countless times with drafts and free agents. We are rebuilding even though no one claims that we are. As I always say - the line is the NUMBER ONE concern.
We need Ricky, Ronnie is so so. Ricky has always shown he can run with the best of them. Give him another shot.
One thing that we have seen is that Cameron isn't going to be swayed by what we the fans want (think Brady Quinn). My guess is that Cameron has decided to build this team in his image and Ricky and Daunte are not part of that image. Neither was Brady Quinn. I'll give Cameron the benefit of the doubt for now but if this team is picking first in the draft next year, he will have a lot to answer for.
Any of you, including Cam or Randy, realize Ricky spent some three odd months in Canada (during the season) volunteering at a food shelter of sorts? Did he ever put light on himself, of course not, it wasn't until a reporter stumbled on it that it became known.
IMHO, it would be a great travesity for the Dolphins not to take Ricky back with open arms.
Fact is, Ricky is an exemplery athlete. Just look at the last four games of 05, what did he average 150 yards/game? This was after a year-off from work.
Unproven, Ronnie Brown. Barely cracked 1000 yards in his second season, injury prone, in all honesty, the questions out of the draft came through: Can he be the "man" on campus? No. He is not a 350 carry back, year after year.
Joke: Thought of Booker being a solid backup in his first year. I must admit, I know nothing about him, but if he is anything like the last back we got out FSU (See Travis Minor signs with Rams), I am not betting the farm with this guy.
Closing: I like Ricky, he IMHO is a very straight-up guy, an exceptional athlete, hard-working, and maybe a bit different than everybody else. Who gives a rat's arss. Who is define "normal". As that, it may be best for Ricky to get traded so as a person, he can stop having to deal with the BS Miami consistently throws upon him and can stop hanging that 8.6 millin dollar, black-cloud over his head for "abdoning" them. Whatever, my expectations for the season are lower than ever and so mine as well keep kicking Dolphin fans while there down.
I am not feeling very good about the Cameron. Its seems hes a hypocrite (not giving a guy the QB position but rather to earn it). Hes on some kind of rebuilding plan to make the Dolphins a church camp. If he isn't smart enough to take a shot at Williams at LEAGUE MINIMUM, then hes a complete MORON. Then theres the half dizzy Trent Green that Cam just loves, but what happens if he gets hurt, will Lemon be the man. Only if you want the first pick next year and want JT to retire then go ahead. As a New Yorker, I find this unnecessary comment revolting and repulsive. This is not the place for political comments of that nature, especially from someone who wasn't there -- I was. As a Dolphin fan, I hope this idiot roots for the Jets.
I would hope that the moderators of this board would remove such comments.
That said, I think the Phins will give Ricky a chance to prove himself in training camp. It will cost them nothing to take a look and see if he can add to the offense. If not, they should try to get a late round draft pick before cutting him.
Armando, it was nice of you to pay your respects to Daunte for the loss of his mother, but the interlude in your often nasty comments has already passed.
It would be good to show decency and respect to Daunte and other good Dolphin people, regardless of whether they have smoked marijuana (which does not make Ricky "bad"), all the time.
As for your predictions, we all know how good you are at predicting things. Odds are better that you are wrong, of course.
That said, I do think Cam has been quite the opposite of Don Shula, he has showed little class in his dealings with Daunte and Ricky. And that arrogance and lack of class is going to come back and haunt him big time unless he changes his ways. As for Mueller, his problem is he is never satisfied and always impatient and would trade his first born just because he could.

Well according to ESPN, Ricky popped positive in April, and the testing Doctors have recommended that Ricky not be allowed to be reviewed for consideration again until Septmeber. That ought to just about wrap up his NFL career. Unfortunate too, I really like the guy; but you can't seem to count on him. Smoke all the dope you want AFTER you quit playing football.

If they get rid of either C-Pep or Ricky without at least giving them both a look, then Mueler and Cameron might as well go to Alabama and apply for assistant jobs for Dick Saban and the Crimson Lied. You just can't explain the reason that any coach would trade for a washed up 37 y/o concussed QB for for a much younger former pro bowl QB in C-Pep. Give him a chance! If his knee is not ready this summer then make an attempt to trade him. There is nothing to lose but so much to gain. Even if you do get Green, still give C-Pep a chance to compete for the starting job. This is a QB that 3 or 4 years ago was considered one of the best to strap it on at his position. It had noting to do with having Moss either, otherwise, Moss would've continued to punish the backfield of opposing defenses. Maybe C-Pep made Moss and Moss really didn't make C-Pep. I think what he did last year on one leg was still better than what most other QB's can do with both legs. Again, give him a chance. There is nothing to lose.
I agree with what most others are posting about Ricky too. In 2 years the guy failed one drug test for an amphetamine-like substance that was unknowingly an ingredient in a holistic herbal supplement that he took while practicing yoga. So he failed 1 drug test out of what (500 or something?)Let's look at all the positives and not look at the 1 negative. The difference b/w marijuana and speed is like night and day. If you think that a weed junky would switch to speed as his next choice of drug, then you don't know a thing about his problem. If you think that an individual with social anxiety disorder would resort to the drug they found in his system, then that shows how ignorant you really are. All that would do is exacerbate his problems instead of suppressing his problems like marijuana did. Ricky is a great talent, and I believe he wouldn't make the selfish decisions that he made in the past if he is given another chance. He's clean! Passing 499 out of 500 drug tests proves that he's clean! Everybody has problems. At least he admitted to having a problem and went out and helped himself. I respect him for that; and therefore, I respect him for the person that he was and has become. The fact that such a proven talent is willing to play for the league minimum so that he can help the team that he previously let down just exemplifies his character. Just like with C-Pep, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain. Both of these players deserve at least a chance to prove what they can do for our Miami Dolphins. God knows that we need all the help we can get. The last thing you want to do is trade them so some other team can have a chance to beat us with weapons that we sold to them. Old habits die hard. Ricky's football career is over, he's better off in Grass Valley, teaching yoga. Now it makes even more sense as to why the Dolphins drafted Lorenzo Booker (I thought he was a steal in the third round anyways) Much like with Culpepper, it's best that the Miami Dolphins move away from Ricky Williams. It's a new era, and a new regime. There's no sense into holding onto the mistakes of previous regimes.

The silent majority thinks Ricky needs a swift kick in the ass out of town. The silent majority understands why Daunte Culpepper is not a good fit in Cam Cameron's offense. The silent majority didn't beat their wives when Miami didn't pick Brady Quinn.

First and foremost, i am incredibly disappointed in the news on Ricky. I was one of his biggest supporters for him coming back to the team. Yes he is a good person. no , he wouldnt hurt a fly. you will never see him "making it rain" in a strip club. so in the grand scheme of problems with players in the NFL, his is a minor one.
What people need to understand is if ricky falls off the wagon again mid-season, he is gone . if i am a coach/GM/owner i want to be able to rely on the players i have and not always worry wether or not i will have them the next game.
as far as Cpep, he needs to be given a chance. Saban thrusted him in the lineup prematurely, and made the injury worse. if given time to heal back to 100%, Cpep can be the stud he was a couple years ago. this is a man who threw 39 TD's and 11 int in one season. ill take him over green anyday.
I can't really see them not reinstating Ricky. I know the league is cracking down on off-field problem children, but Ricky has already done his time. What will they do double fine him and break their own rules. I think he would win that law suit.
The bigger issue from the Dolphins stand point is; how do you depend on Ricky ever again? It's a double edged sword, on one hand you have a very talented running back, on the other you have a guy with a history of baling on you.
Mueller obviously saw the quirk in Ricky and sent him packing at NO. Now he is back with the same problem. You have to wonder with all the rhetoric about the Samoan connection and team values whether Cameron and Mueller believe baling Ricky fits in. I don't think so.
My opinion is; he will be reinstated and promptly traded to the highest bidder. Don't get me wrong I think Ricky is a great back and I think he would help the team. I just think Cameron is trying to create a new identity and unfortunately Ricky is not in the mix.

Again for Ricky? I knew he enjoyed the herb as a friend encountered Ricky on the Yuba river in Grass Valley, but it sounded as if he turned the corner. Evidently his holistic masking agents let him down. If this is the truth, then it is a shame Ricky misrepresented where he is at and that he wanted to play again. But it is amazing how Marijuana use in the offseason is such a major offense to the NFL while we all know a very high percentage of players can use HGH, Steroids and other illegal substances freely?
It is a shame to see Ricky waste such talent, but it is also a shame to be banned from the NFL for something relatively harmless that is medicenal (legally so in CA) for Social Anxiety.

The fact that RW was being tested for months but only failed a test now say one thing to me: While Ricky may say an consciously believe that he wants to play in the NFL, deep down inside he does not want to play.
Just like his quitting on Wannstedt: he didn't quit because he failed his third test, he fail his third test because he wanted to quit.
It is sad to see someone like RW fail this way. He is no Cecil Collins, no Michael Vick (dog fighting is not cool), no Pacman Jones.
I wish he could have figured out what he really wanted to do (i.e. no more football) and spared us the drama.

Only people who refuse to admit they were wrong are still bashing Cam/Mueller for their off-season decisions. It's pretty clear to me that these guys are forward thinkers and serious men that are not "hoping" it comes together, but instead are making the hard choices of putting this team together.
Again, Cam's handling of the RW situation has been full of sober and mature wisdom, and RW proved Cameron's approach to be reasonable and prudent.

Hey, don't bash Ronnie Brown in here with Ricky Bashing. He's done a decent job. Maybe not what everyone expected from a #2, but not bad either. Lets see what he can do with a guy who actually knows how to coach an offense. Remember that he was a rookie 2 years ago and was late to camp and the offense was terrible last year and he still managed 1000 yards on the ground even missing a few games and without much help from the pass attack. This might be a break out year for him.

I remember when the dolphins passing game sucked (still does)and ricky (not Ronnie) had to carry the load and score most of the touchdowns. I didn't hear the miami brass and league calling him out for being a smoker back then. So why is it such a friggin' problem now. I love ricky and I don't care if he smokes a pound before or after a game just as long as he produces on the field, which he always has and with efficiency. People, I realize many of you are current or former potheads, but the facts are it is an illegal, illicit drug. It is banned by the NFL and it is not a supersecret ban imposed on only Ricky Williams.
The guy knows he's not supposed to light up a joint. He's on suspension, for goodness sakes, for doing that very thing. And he's no kid. He's like 30 years old and has 12 children. So Eff him if he can't control his addiction. And Eff you guys if you can't see how wrong he is for doing it.

I say hire Marty shotnheimer or what ever his name is as head coach and demote Cameron to just O cordinater... So marty can make the decisions and Cameron can call the plays... Hand the ball to ricky... And culpepper deep to chambers... If we lose an experienced back in Ricky.. Why not get that experience back in Corey Dillon...(SB ring) Work booker in here and there...

Ricky has shown me, as a Dolfan, that he deserves another chance. He would not cost alot of $$$ at League minimum. Keep the Media away from him from now until this upcoming season is over, let him play football, the game, not football, the Politics. In other words media back off, leave the man alone, you would not want all your problems broadcast over TV, internet, Radio, etc., and I am sure you all have problems...Ricky if you dont make it back to the NFL, use your image as a pot smoker, sell it to all the Head Shops, and still make lots of $$$$. If Marijuana is so popular, and IT IS, you can still make a fortune if promoted the right way. So theres your positive to come out of all this for you.

Ricky threw away his last chance. He has no value to the Dolphins. He can't get on the field and no team will give up a draft pick for him.
Sad to see a talented football player throw his career away like this. I don't feel sorry for him, because he has had every opportunity given to him to succeed, yet his mind is weak and he could not overcome his addiction. It's a choice....don't feel sorry for him it was his choice always. The quality of life that you live is dictated by the choices you make.
