Culpepper says he'll be ready for next camp

Just got out of the Dolphins locker room where Daunte Culpepper told me he expects to be ready to be back on the field for the next Dolphins minicamp which will be June 8-10.

"I'm going to use it as a way to get ready for training camp," Culpepper said.

Coach Cam Cameron said Culpepper's right knee is in the 90 percentile of health, while Culpepper said he's feeling no pain in the knee

More to come on that.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins have released the names of the 14 college free agents they have signed following the draft. Of all the guys to look for, MKristo Bruce is at the top of my list.

He's something a tweener, not fast enough to play linebacker, not stout enough to be a fulltime defensive end. But the Dolphins think he's molded like Jason Taylor and even David Bowens. So he fills a need and Randy Mueller told me he's got a legit chance to fit in if he's the player they saw on film.

We'll see. Here's the signees:

Mkristo Bruce DE 6-6 260 10/16/84 Washington State ’07
Courtney Bryan S 6-0 202 10/2/84 New Mexico State ‘07
Marion Dukes T 6-3 319 11/22/84 Clemson ‘07
Tala Esera G 6-3 310 6/15/84 Hawaii ‘07
Tuff Harris CB 6-0 198 1/23/83 Montana ‘07
Gabe Hatchett WR 6-2 216 1/19/83 Southern Oregon ‘07
Marquay Love DT 6-0 307 7/20/85 Houston ’07
Edmond Miles LB 6-0 230 7/6/84 Iowa ’07
Stephen Parker G 6-4 303 8/2/84 Arkansas ’07
Geoffrey Pope CB 6-0 186 6/21/84 Howard ’07
KerryReed WR 6-1 201 12/24/84 Michigan State ’07
David Sutton WR 6-6 222 5/30/84 Texas-El Paso ’07
Chris Vedder S 5-11 210 9/4/85 San Jose State ’07
Julius Wilson T 6-4 327 10/17/83 Alabama-Birmingham ’07

What about Malone? He has been listed as a free agent signing.

Your rival paper has more info and Malone along with four others are being listed as having a try-out during this mini camp.

Having a try-out is different than signing a contract.

Geoffrey Pope is also an interesting prospect. Read he is one of the fastest players in the draft, faster than Ginn possibly, had a 40 time of 4.23 or something.

Julius Wilson also has gotten favorable reviews from various draft experts, he could work out.

Tuff Harris! Smart player, excellent punt returner and four year starter at corner. He can run.

I hope he makes it. Not too often a Northern Cheyenne kid from Colstrip, MT gets a shot to play in the NFL.

Why no Gators? Earl Everett, Steve Rissler & Reggie Lewis seem like they would have been good to bring in......maybe Randy offered and they just decided to go elsewhere. I also thought Siler and Wynn would have been nice pick ups before they got drafted by others. Wynn reminds me of Michael Turner who almost netted San Diego a 1st round pick and then some in a trade this year. Siler is an underrated instinctive and hard worker/leader....sounds like a young Zach to me.

I was surprised too when we didn't take siler in the 7th and took the other ILB from cuse, Siler is the man

With Mkristo's strength and body lean, I would actually look for the Fins to have him bulk up and try to become a backup as a face-up defensive end (Matt Roth's spot). I thought Russ Lande was spot on when he said that. The Dolphins seem to have Abe Wright planned for Rush End and I'm not sure they are placing Mkristo in direct competition with him for that...I think Akbar Gbaja-Biamila will be Abe's primary competition.

What else did Daunte have to say?

Did you see the WR Sutton listed at 6' 6". If that is right, and the guy has good hands, that would be a great pickup. Don't know much about him, something must be wrong if no one else got him.

Hey Armando, what's up with one of your competitors, Greg Bedard ? The guy has a hate on for Beck, every article and blog he writes he's trashing the kid. Can you go confront the guy for us and tell him to knock it off and be a profesional ? The guy looks like Quinn is his love child or something. He makes the fans who booed the other day look happy.

6-6, 260 is not stout enough? My understanding is that the bigger issue with Mkristo is he is a tad slow. On the other hand, he is known as a good leader and has the character qualities that Cam is looking for. He is a good football player, the issue will be whether he can be good at the pro level. But he certainly has the size to be a DE, the question again is whether he has the quickness. Strength, that can be arranged.

I hope the kid turns out to be a killer blocker but this running through the all thing is silly. It was a single piece of sheetrock with holes in it. Not very tough. Fans need to worry more about the onfield production of players and less about the silly stuff.

kudos to the Herald for posting the titles under the blogs so we don't have to open ones that haven't been updated

so about Culpepper, I really think it would be a mistake to cut him. I see no point in it. The guy has a good track record (when he's been healthy), and is reportedly on pace to be fully recovered within a couple of months. Why NOT keep him around? Because his ego might be bruised if he's not the starter? so what? He certainly has more long term potential than Trent Green, and if John Beck busts, at least we still have him around to find out what he can do. Dolphins, DONT CUT CPEP!!!

The Sporting News draft guy Russ Lande had a glowing opinion of the Dolphins draft, especially of Soliai.

He also had some choice words for the Miami media pushing Quinn in an interview with Phins.com. Clearly, you pseudo-amateur football experts working as journalists don't know crap about football.

Culpepper... My only advice is to get yourself an agent. You're going to need one.
