Calvin Pace going with the J-E-T-S

The Dolphins have lost out on linebacker Calvin Pace who minutes ago agreed to a contract with the New York Jets.

The Jets stepped up this afternoon, increasing the amount of guaranteed money they were prepared to give Pace from about $19.5 million to $22 million. I am told the Dolphins also reached the $20 million mark but were unwilling to go as high as New York.

Pace's total contract is believed to be a six-year deal with the total worth between $42-$45 million depending on wether he reaches some incentives. Pace is going to make $26 million his first three years which merely means he's picking up an extra $4 million in base salary during that time.

This for a player who only has had one good year -- that in 2007 when he had 6.5 sacks.

The fact Pace is not coming now causes the Dolphins pause. Joey Porter, whose future would be uncertain had Pace signed, may have to remain in Miami's plans.

If this guy was our most coveted free agent then we should have pursued him HARD. I don't know enough about him to have an opnion one way or the other, but we DID clear all that cap room. If Parcells loved him so much why not pay the money to get him?

Probably why Jason will have to retire to leave the Dolphins. Parcells knew earlier on they weren't going to go that high for Pace. Now they keep Jason and try to find a young guy in a draft that is rich with this kind of talent for a lot less money.

Yipes! That's crazy money for a guy with one good season, even if he does have a lot of potential upside. Let's spend that money elsewhere. O-line, Defensive backs, etc. I'd have rather spent that money on Lance Briggs.

Ridiculous money for a guy with one good season. This shows Mangini's immaturity versus Parcells' experience.

Not only with Porter, but because JT shifts down as an OLB in the 3-4, this might mean that the chances of him being traded are reduced.

Echoing the sentiments of others...glad we didn't over pay for this guy who likely would have had limited impact for us. We need players but we also need guys who can provide value. I don't see Pace as an over all value to the team at that asking price. Too much for too little.

I agree with the poster who mentioned the best part of this situation is that we cost the Jets 3-5 million. I LOVE IT.

At 1-15, we do not need to be fighting with other teams to see who can overpay a FA the most. Wait until we are a more developed team, then overspend on a FA or 2 to gain the final piece.

5:31 PM

They're paying for potential. It was Pace's first year in the 3-4 and he played well. It's better than paying $40+ million to an unproven rookie. I'm not defending the move. I'm glad the Jets overpayed, but at least Pace is entering his prime and showed something last year. This also brings Chris Long back into the picture for the first pick.

They are N-U-T-S. N-U-T-S I tell you. That is just stupid and throws the whole thing out of whack. They have signed 2 linemen that they are paying over 10 mill a year. That really plays havoc with a salary cap.
Good on them. Another 4 years of mediocrity.

I'm glad the Jets overpaid, I'd rather see that money used for other things. Doesn't make sense to overpay. Get what we can in the draft, get only those free agents that are values for the money and keep the finances in check. Non-wasted money this year means more money available again next year with fewer cuts to clear cap space. Good financial decision.

Thaks, J-E-T-S. Thanks for over pay a player. 7 million per sack. I hope you have the salary cap for next year to resign players. Go J-E-T-S Y-O-U O-V-E-R P-A-Y. FOR THE DOLPHINS, I LIKE VERNON GOLSTHON OR SEDRIC ELLIS. WE NEED AN OT AT 2 ROUND. BYE BYE PACE SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER.

MIke in Orlando: While Briggs may more talented, he would not be a good fit here. He is a weakside Cover-2 LB. While I believe any coach vcan find a way to use his talent if he was already here, I see no sense inbuilding a philosophy and then adding the wrong guy. PLus do we need TWO LB at the same time who wreck their cars and leave the scene! ;)

Yeah they Jets blew their load to save office jons but they mortgaged the future to do it.

I love it because the reality isthat three teams are elite in the AFC and the Jets aren't one of them. They have set themselves up to win in the next two years and then rebuild. UNfortunately, Manning and Brady are in their prime and so it won't even matter. IN three years we we are poised to make a run the Patriots and Colts will be on the downturn.

Go Phins! Enjoy Chris Long. I will!

Who's going to throw the ball for them, wheres there # 1 receiver, this team is not close. By the time 2010 hits and the fins are once again contenders, the jets will be on the down side paying dearly for these dummmmm "A--" moves!!!!

honestly, i would like to see jake long as the # 1...in order for n e qb to shine, we need a line...for ex...when giants demolished the pats line, u saw how tom brady look like urf average qb...i like john beck, strong arm, really quick release, accurate, he needs to learn how to put more touch on the ball so the wr's can get yardage of a comp...but if giving a strong enough line he'll b superior...he already has tools similar to marino n farve...imo

Ceed, 6.5 sacks divided by 17 games equals .38 (sacks) per game. That's about one sack every 3 games. That's what he was referring to. But the guy did have 98 tackles which isn't too shabby but 22 million guaranteed is still way too much. He's probably sitting at home still in shock that the Jets gave him that kind of money. And to the guys wondering about the 20 million guaranteed offer that the fins gave him I would have to believe that when it was all said and done the final offer wasn't even close to the 45 million he can make with the Jets. I applaud the Phins for not breaking the bank for an unproven player who, i will not deny, does have potential but had 1 good year!!! Agreed Jake Long should be our pick at #1. The guy is a beast and can be our new Richmond Webb for the next twelve years. Long,Smiley,Satele,?,Carey! That's the makings of one hell of an offensive line! I have to give credit to Mueller for picking up Satele with the pick for Welker. Looks like he could be our anchor for the next decade and if A. Wright turns out as good as Taylor was saying he looked, the trade will look smart in the long run. These guy could be pro bowlers when Welker is on the downslide of his career. I say we take J.Long this year and draft a DE next year. NYScott

8:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

James, that's a good strategy if Baker is still there at 32. I would be nervous that we would miss him AND Long and be stuck without a good left tackle. I think they should take the beast, Jake Long and grab a DE in the later rounds that they can groom for the next couple of years while JT is still around. If he doesn't look like he's going to work out they could use the 1st round pick next year (which will probably be pretty high again) to pick up a DE. If we can get a dominant o-line going this year and grind it out with Ronnie and Ricky that would help the defense tremendously. But I like where you're going with the draft order and it would be great if it worked out that way. NYScott

What I think is now that we know how bad Cam really was it's not to surprising that Beck struggled. Between Cams miserable play calling and an inconsistent line it's no wonder he had a rough time. Factor in his first two games were against stellar defenses in the rain and mud. Beck will definitely get a good chance this year and if we can build the o-line I'm hoping for he just may surprise a lot of people. That being said we should still draft a QB 32ND. Flacco would be my choice if he was still there. I don't like the way Brohm releases the ball especially knowing how Ireland and Parcells like huge o-linemen. That side arm garbage just isn't going to cut it. NYScott

PFT has added some comments regarding Parcells asking the BC coach for Ryan game tapes. Basically, the NFL doesn't want 32 NFL teams to bombard college after college with film requests. The teams should contact NFL films for the tape. The speculation is that Parcells knew it would leak... you know, Parcells being Parcells because Parcells knows that if he were Parcells, that is what he, Parcells, would do. And who will surface first, Bin Laden or Ireland or Sparano?? You would think that a GM or head coach might have been interviewed by this point.

When I think 42 million for a guy that put up 6.5 sacks...in one year...how many in his career...like 14??
his back up had 3 sacks...half of that...so what is he worth 21 million??
we will probably pick him up, blackstock...sry if its mispelled has worked with a 3-4 since college...is younger...prob has more upside...and honestly was I thought a steal for the Cardinals in the 3rd round.
Hopefully we nab him before the pats or the bengals get him.
I think in the draft I would love to get Jake Long first pick, that should be the obvious choice as we can't tie up that much money with Ryan and there are simply no other options at LT, and can you pass up a franchis LT??
2nd round we can pray Flacko or Brohm fall there, but can we afford to take them when CB and WR is such a neccesity which will be more likely to be available here
We then need to grab a young TE, along with the CB and WR, a nice backup G or T in the later rounds, a hybrid outside LB and I would love to get Henne or Woodson, I think they have a lot more upside than they have been acredited to

This guy didn't sign because of JT not because of money. He would have been overpaid at 20mil and now he is even more over paid at 22mil.
Mark my word today we will trade JT to the Green Bay Packers for one of their 1st round picks. They have talent and just need some proven help on D to get them over the hump. They dont need more young guys on that roster. On draft day we will pick up another first for Taylor and Pace will be remiss about not coming to Miami, where he could have played in better weather for a better organization and for a better coach and GM tandem. There is no pressure here to win right away and he could have played his heart out and won more than anyone thought and he would have been hailed great.

I hear you people talk bad about Peezy (a.k.a Joey Porter), but sometimes it takes more than sacks and tackels to win games. It takes passion and excitement. If he only gets 3 sacks all season but he ignites the guy beside him who and he gets 10 sacks that makes him just as valuable. No one in the league plays with the amount of passion Peezy does!! Nobody!!

You know what jets fans. You guys are right the fins over paid for Jerry Porter, buthe is a proven porter with a championship ring. The jets over paided for a guy that had 6.5 sacks, plus the (only) reason ( key word ) he was even on the field last year is because the starter got hurt. So he had a pretty good year as a replacement, so lets pay him 22 million dollars. J-E-T-S!!! HAHAHAHAH

In case noone has noticed Parcells has added depth at the positions that are at the toip of the friggin draft boards. DT, QB, LB, and O-Line. Now he can threaten other teams to use the first pick on anybody he sees fit. With JT, Porter, Crowder, and the new LBs, we dont have immediate need at LB and we can take Ryan or fool the Falcons into handing us over some picks for that spot! Same strategy can work for any of the top 6 teams in the draft order sonce the talent level is pretty much the same for the first 6 picks. So in short...stop with the trading JT RUMORS! Other teams need to be convinced he is staying in Miami whether he is or not!

ok first of all jets fans..y would you spend the most out of any team in the NFL on one of the worst free agent periods in a long time/ all the players u added are how old?
how many good years does Faneca have...3...maybe 4...Woody? Calvin Pace may be good, but not great...and great is what gets you 22 mil guaranteed, hes gettin paid almost as much as JT, guess what JT was defensive player of the year...what was Pace...Pro Bowl?? oh yea none. And in 4 years when Clemmons is good...who is he gona throw to...Laverneus Coles, an up and down receiver who is approaching his end...and who is gona run...a Thomas Jones who needs a complement to run the ball...how many TD's he had last year?? And if you think you guys are rebuilding and throwing all this money around to beat the dolphins twice...then ur out of ur mind cause if anything it would either be because of the Giants...or the Pats
sry but we have added role players...its been proven you cant just mesh things to work like the dolphins have been doing for a while...the Pats as much as i hate them have role players...so good luck jets...if u beat us congrats...but u got nothing to brag about
