On Manny Wright, Marcus Vick cuts and more
Just had a sit-down with Dolphins GM Randy Mueller. Very interesting stuff, but first the news:
Receiver Marcus Vick and defensive tackle Manny Wright have been cut.
Bye-bye Nick's kids.
Wright was a project from the beginning and after crying as a rookie and being AWOL last season, he took a called third strike with the Dolphins this offseason when he reported to the conditioning program sloppily out of shape.
At the minicamp two weeks ago -- three weeks into the team's offseason conditioning program -- Wright had managed to get DOWN to 345 pounds. His assigned weight is 330.
For Vick, the fact he is one of the slowest and least experienced receivers on the team made for a bad combination. The Dolphins can deal with inexperience, but they have no patience for a lack of speed anymore.
"I want to gasp when that ball is tossed to an Ahman Green," Mueller told me. "I want that feeling. We had that in Seattle for a while. When Deuce [McAllister] was young in New Orleans, we had that. It’s the feeling that your guy might go at any time. He might not, but he might. We need to get more of those guys on offense.
"Hopefully we'll get that feeling with Lorenzo [Booker] and Ted [Ginn Jr.].”
Mueller told me the Dolphins have one, maybe two more pieces of the puzzle to add during the remainder of free agency: READ OFFENSIVE LINE HERE.
Of course, Trent Green will happen eventually. It must be mentioned that Green knows the Miami offense even though he's never played a down for the Dolphins. The offense has been handed down from Don Coryell to Joe Gibbs to others like Dick Vermeil and Cam Cameron.
So time is on Miami's side as it waits for Green to be released, or for KC to realize it has no negotiating power to get a deal done for its price.
As for the turnover the Dolphins have undergone in the three months Mueller has been piloting the ship?
“We think change is good," he told me. "We need to shake it up. It wasn’t working. We’re going to continue to look to improve this team. If it can be done, some way , somehow, we’ll do it.”

I guess neither cut is surprising. Cameron has cut all the "problem" children from our roster, and these two certainly qualified. Though I thought vick had kept his nose clean, maybe cam thought he still was worth the risk.
Ginn and that DT in the 4th round made them expendable...
Marcus Vick was slated to get a shot at a returner.. and Manny was getting a shot at DT but not with this new guy...
Why did they bother contacting Manny to get him to come back if they were just going to cut him. I am not defending him since he showed up at the mini-camp over weight. Vick is no loss.

I'm excited about the new draft picks, and that we did not get Quinn. Quinn will do his Joey Harrington for a couple years and be gone. Beck looked solid in the few BYU games I caught this past year.

I understand the cuts I guess I just don't understand making them so early. Especially with Vick. I really wanted to see what he could offer and I think at least the next 2 minicamps if not training camp would offer that opportunity with no real cost to the organization.

It seems to me that Mueller is cutting ties with players that have character issues and stocking up on high-character players. Look at the Beck the Mormon, Teddy Ginn who said "Thank the Lord" more than I've ever heard anyone during a post-draft interview. I think this latest purge is removing some lower character guys that were hanging around b/c of their potential, but losing them is no real loss to the team. It also sends a message to players that the new regime won't tolerate a lack of character on the team. Just my $0.02 worth.
manny Wright showed up fat, again. The guy is a loser, boo hoo. Vick couldn't hold Ginn's jock as a returner or wr.
I understand why the organization is cutting tides and moving on. It's too much work ahead for the organization. The organization can't and want baby sit grown men, who do not want to properly prepare themselve, to contribute to a winning season. Although, I wish we would have given Manny a little more time to see what he could contribute to the team now that Saban is gone.
Vick is a athlete that needs work and time to develop as a WR; time that the organization doesn't have. We wish Manny and him the best, but the organization must move on to better itself.
Hey R. Howard, why should Miami give Manny Wright more time ? They gave him a whole season on the roster, then he left in a huff during camp last year because guys like Fred Evans were working hard and earning their spot. So what does he do when the big bad Saban is gone, shows up fat. Come on, what has the guy done to deserve more time ? This isn't pre school, this is the NFL.

Miami simply threw away the 9th pick. Period. There is no excuse for substituting the facts (hey, the really thin guy is hurt and maybe he can't take a hit) for wishful thinking (maybe the Patriots will act like Michigan and the thin guy will do well).
Every year, I hope for the best. Last year, I hoped the father of lies, Saban, was right and Dante would be better than Drew. No chance.

Not surprising. Marcus Vick should've never been signed here, he was a wasted roster spot. I wish Manny would've gotten his act together, but when you show up to mini-camp overweight on what is considered your last chance to make a good impression with the team, Manny getting cut was almost a given.

As for Dolphin stuff, I am fine with them passing on Quinn if they don't like him but I do suspect Ginn will have proved to be a reach. Good riddance to Manny and Vick - it sends the right message.

Any way you can look into doing an article on Cameron's connection to the Ginn family? Based on his explanation to the fans at the draft party, I really get the feeling he used the #9 on Ginn as a favor to the family. I believe Quinn has a higher percentage chance of succeeding in the NFL compared to Beck and Cameron likely would have gone with the safer draft choice (Quinn) had it not been for his connection to the Ginns. After all, Cleveland didn't trade their 2008 1st rounder to pick Beck. Baltimore wasn't poised to take Beck had Cleveland not traded up. They were targeting Quinn. I'm sure these teams put just as much evaluation into Quinn and Beck as Cameron did, and they did what a smart coach is supposed to do...take the player with the greater chance of succeeding. I doubt Cam is THAT MUCH greater at evaluating QB talent than them. He knew Brady was better, just like the other teams, just felt like he owed it to the Ginn family to hook their son up with 'top 10 bucks' and then settle for a slightly inferior qb for less money. Maybe I've got the wrong idea about the family connection here, but I just think it was an interesting choice of words Cam used to address the fans on Saturday.
O.K. It's showtime, these were great cuts, this should send notice to one Ricky Williams, your services are no longer needed in Miami. Great move Randy and Cam, Randy sent him packing once before, and hope he will do it again, this team doesn't need anymore dead weight like the crying fatass, and the pot smoking free sprit and the child molester.

The only question I have is if they are going to cut Ricky and they are worried about having "character" guys on the team, why did they sign Porter? It seems like they are sending a mixed message. 'If you do bad things you will not play for the Dolphins,,,that is if you're a bad player to begin with. If you're really good you can stay.' So Ricky should be staying right?

They should have kept Vick and let him compete in training camp for the QB spot. Going into camp we'll have Lemon and Beck (maybe Green later) You need four or five QB in camp for all the throwing that goes on. There was absolutely nothing to lose by giving Vick a shot - he was a decent QB in college. As for wright, he just blew it. Should have been in on weight after being out a year. Just plain Stupid.

Terry Shea spent almost a month coaching Quinn for all of his predraft workout/combine activities. An entire month! And Beck himself has said that the dolphins spent more time with him than anyone. Now that that's settled, for one minute you should pretend you don't know more about NFL QB development than Cam Cameron. And during that moment, scrape the couch for change that you can later use to buy your Beck jersey. That day is coming and soon.
@jed: Saban was a very good college coach. He was, at best, a mediocre pro coach. Half the job in college is recruiting. In the NFL recruiting doesn't mean jack if it isn't backed up by a contract with $$$.

Upon reflection, most of the so called experts are now publicly saying that this draft may be better than they first thought. AND, this thing about Ginn not being a top ten pick has been blown out of the water with Houston admitting they were going to grab him at #10. Oh and by the way, St. Louis was going to grab him at #13. A 4 spot difference is not a reach.

Okay after a few days of reflection I'm okay with the draft picks. I must admit that I was shocked to hear that Ted Ginn was our #1 selection. But as a Miami Hurricane fan I didn't want to see a Notre Dame guy be the face of the franchise for the next decade.
I would rather lose with Cleo than see Brady Quinn lead the troops. Sure you can call me irrational all you want, but it is what it is and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.
Now on to my gradual acceptance of Ted Ginn. Remember when Randy Moss first came into the league. He was surrounded by Cris Carter and Jake Reed. And all he had to do was run two routes - a fly pattern and a deep post.
Granted Chris Chambers and Marty Booker aren't in those guys league, but if we can exploit a few mismatches it will allow Ginn to run the two routes he feels comfortable with. That's right a post and fly pattern.
So as long as the Dolphins utilize his strengths we'll be okay. I must say I've taken a sip of the Kool Aid. Anybody else want some?

Armando, have you gotten any feedback/confirmation on Mueller's comment the other day that he knew two teams had Ginn targeted to pick if Miami didn't grab him?
Aww it hurts a little to see them go because vick was electrifying on offense, and Manny added depth for Defensive line, but they did draft people to fill those positions.

Armando knows that I predicted Ted Ginn would be our first round pick three weeks before the NFL draft. Fact is....if we didn't take him at # 9 in the first round, the Houston Texas would have taken him at # 10. Our draft was above average. Mueller and company had a very good draft plan and followed through on it very well. Ginn will be in the pro bowl in a maximum of three years. Brady Quinn will be a career backup QB.
I was more disappointed with the media's coverage of the draft than the selections made by Dolphins' management. Journalism is now opinionism. There were a few writers and reporters who actually were able to objectively report on the Phins' picks. The rest just jumped on the ESPN bandwagon of acting as if the Dolphins management purposely sabotaged the draft. We all want victories now, including the media. Zero games have been played in the 07, 08, 09 and beyond seasons which this draft will affect. So, why all the negative reporting on the picks the team made? Was the media misled into thinking we would take BQ? Isn't a poker face part of draft day? Do you want a GM who isn't crafty? Don't you think the GM would have traded down to get Ginn if there was an opportunity to do so? The media responds to the picks as if Dolphins' management are complete idiots and they use that angle to sell stories and push an idea which they are only projecting. I am not angry about the way Cam and the GM have handled things and for those of you who think you have inside information about Quinn and Ginn and Beck and anyone else who was drafted, think about how little in life, your life, you can control, now put that in football terms and realize it is all a crap-shoot. Yes, some rolls of the die have better odds, but by whose terms and from what perspective are they looking at those odds? Some teams draft better than others and some get luckier. I remember many people claiming Ryan Leaf was a better pick than Peyton Manning and the information they had may have been viable. Then, there were a bunch of people who claimed Ryan was not better, but he would have an equal or similar career as Petyon. I don't know of many people who thought Leaf would be a complete bust. So, all this hype about the current management ruining the future of the Dolphins, first, should not be reported, because the future is only prospective news, and second, because opinionism is only good if you're right, and you just don't know that yet, do you? For the fans, hell, think whatever you want, but at least know that Coach and GM did have a plan and it wasn't dependent upon how much the Media played-up the Golden Boy, it was based on what they felt was best for our team. jeff j.

Answer to a couple of questions:
1. The Dolphins are NOT interested in Keyshawn.
2. Mueller told me he heard teams behind him were interested in Ginn but did not have actual evidence of that. All that is conjecture. The NFL Network reported the Texans would take Ginn at No. 10 if Miami went another direction.
i understand the issue of "character" whaen dealing with the players on your roster,but i just get the feeling now that the players getting signed and drafted by the "new regime" are being graded according to their religous convictions and not their talent,anyone else feel the same way?
Why would Cameron want to keep Coach Quitter's long-term projects around? They're both useless wastes of roster space, they'll never amount to squat in the NFL.
I'd also prefer to say goodbye to Ricky Williams for good. His golden season was five years and two coaches ago, he brings too much drama and uncertainty. Let him become some other coach's problem.
