The next step with Ricky Williams

Ricky Williams has been reinstated by the NFL.

I told you in an earlier version of this post the reinstatement comes with stipulations: The stipulation is that Williams cannot play until the Nov. 26 game against Pittsburgh. That means Williams is out until Week 12.

Williams can, however, begin attending meetings, practicing and working out at the team's facility immediately.

So what do the Dolphins do with their new running back?

I am told Cam Cameron's first step after announcing Ricky's reinstatement which I am already announcing here, is to sit down and with Ricky and simply talk. Based on that conversation, and subsequent conversations the Dolphins have among themselves, a decision on Ricky's future will be made.

The point is it is not guaranteed the Dolphins will welcome Ricky back. And it is not guaranteed they will discard him.

If you know anything abou the Dolphins you should understand that Ricky is eccentric and easily turns people off with his goofiness sometimes. And Cameron is so straight-laced and driven, he sometimes can grate on players and turn them off as well.

So you have two opposing personalities -- a flower child and a Bobby Knight disciple -- talking, trying to find common ground. Wish I could be a fly on the wall for that one.

If, however, the two come to find some common ground -- and they can because they both love football -- then Ricky Williams might be coming back to the Dolphins backfield within a couple of weeks.

It would mark a good way for the Dolphins to showcase him for a possible trade because I have serious doubts Ricky is in the team's future for 2008 and beyond.

Anyway, this is my second post of the day, so I'm taking the rest of the day off. It's hard slaving over a hot computer.

is it much different than Nick Saban's vs. Ricky Williams? Saban isn't exactly a flower child. I think with our current RB situation they will take him back. So long as he doesn't show up to Cameron's office all baked.

oh ya, this team doesn't seem to be in the mode where they would be discarding anything minutely valuable...even like a 6th rounder next year would be better than nothing.

If Cameron has any common sense at all, get Ricky suited up and on the field as soon as possable. What better way to take pressure off Beck than to have the opposing defense have to worry about what Ricky might have left.

this whole ricky williams deal is stupid. the mans smoked some pot which by the way has been de-criminalized in several states at this point. during which time i will remind you he held his job and was the most productive employee at his position during the time in question. its time to relax the REGAN anti rights war and accept that people have the right to the pursuit of happiness......

Does anyone know if Ricky is even in "football" shape? If not, what's the use. The season is more than half over.

Ricky was awesome behind the worst oline ever. Had he a decent oline he'd have been shattering the record books. He is fit and with fresh legs. Ricky must have easily 3 solid years ahead of him as a premiere back in this league. Also, Ricky has great hands, a top notch receiver out of the backfield. We would be foolish to trade a player of his caliber, especially with the uncertainty of Ronnie Brown's recovery.

No matter what, the Dolphins and Cam aren't in any position to be on the high horse by neglecting any-sort of proven talent. Excuse me, we are 0-9 and totally suck in every aspect. If Ricky is even remotely good, play him like YESTERDAY. Ricky was the only one producing on offense when he was on the team. Oh how quick we forget. And why wouldn't any of his teammates not want him?

12:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

First off, have dolphin fans been watching the games? We don't suck as bad as u guys think. .Our secondary blows besides Will Allen who is serviceable, we are very light up front on D and yet we've had several winable games:(Texans,Browns,Jets,Giants,Redskins,Bills)We had an oppertunity to win all these games and we even scored more points against the Patriots than any team New England has played! we dont completely suck people, we just aren't finishing and need defensive playmakers to seal games.
As for Ricky "the chronic" williams, i love having him back, remember people, Cam will not play him right away or start him because that would be unfair to Cobbs,Booker,Chatman who are busting their butts in practice every day, you can't just come in and leap frog everyone on the depth chart, you have to earn it!And can we please throw the ball to GINN!, and stop using him just as a deep threat decoy!(He was open all game against buffalo, and i mean all game!) and all these analyst say we are the worst team, are u kidding me?! The 49ers haven't scored a touchdown since the Reagan administration, they haven't had a 200 yrd passing game in over a year and a half! please.

It’s a no-brainer, keeping Ricky, who has no value as trade bait, would mean having one of the best potential running backs in footbal...for minimum wage! The value is all in keeping him.

Duh.

1:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Addendum...
For one, don't kid yourselves, I'll bet half the coaches in the league are secretly drooling to have a chance to grab RW at a bargain price. These teams don't hesitate to pick up the worst thugs if they can play, and Ricky ain't no thug, he is a nice guy and a team player. Secondly, with the uniform on, Ricky always gave 100%. People have the right to retire or quit their jobs, just as bosses have the right to lay you off. What's relevant is he wants to play again and it just doesn't seem like much of a gamble that he wouln't be the same solid teammate he always was with the uniform on.

Ricky Williams has value. I'm sure the Titans, Patriots, Vikings, Raiders, Seahawks, Bengals, Saints, and others would take him right Now. Next offseason, some of those teams with injury issues now would still be interested and the Broncos would be added to the list.

Thats my two cents. OK, Mando, take the rest of the day off. You earned it today big boy!!!

1:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its funny, everytime Ricky retires or gets suspended my first thought is, "the guy's a loser, get rid of him." But everytime he comes back I (and it seems I'm not alone) get all excited and can't wait to see him on the field.

The guy has got incredible talent and my biggest fear is that Miami releases him and next year he's the running back version of Randy Moss for another team.

Go Beck!

Ginn was the right choice over "can't win a big game Quinn."

We dont need a QB, we need a defense. Just cause our QB isnt playing on the level of Bob Griese or Dan Marino doesnt mean we have a QB problem. Fix the defense before you try to upgrade anything else. We've only been losing by field goals and thats not the QBs fault.

When asked about Ricky Williams earlier this year, Cam said that the you can tell what a person is going to do by what they have done in the past. If that's the case, Cam ain't shit as a head coach, never was and never gonna be. Welcome Ricky back with open arms dumb ass. Running backs are at a premium in this league because all of the injuries. The franchise is better off with Ricky and worse off with Cam and Dumb Capers. Let's get a real coaching staff, and we won't lose close games to sorry teams.

2:29 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We know Cam will screw this up, but a good head coach would be overjoyed to have Ricky Williams. Ricky is talented, one of the best in the game.

But Cam and Mueller will likely disappoint, as usual.

2:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

welcome back ricky! cam you and that dope mueller better take him back otherwise you should fire yourselves because if you let him walk he'll go right to new england so bring him back or get protesters outside of dolphins stadium.

3:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is a no-brainer. History tells us Ricky cannot be depended on as the premier back, but Ricky is as talented as any back to strap on a helmet. If Ricky did not have the head issues there is no telling where he would have ended up in the record books.

No matter what Cameron thinks with his goody-two-shoes-Ted-Ginn-family-crap he cannot release Williams and think he is doing a service to this team. Ricky did the crime and he served the time. Now he belongs back on the field if only to display his trade value. The harsh reality is that Ricky is a commodity, worthy of draft picks or even as a second back if no team is willing to trade for him. The team simply must get some value out of Ricky. He costs us two number one picks for crying out loud.

As I said in the beginning, this is a no-brainer.

Don't know fellas, I'm kinda torn here. I was dead set against it before today, well, cause I didn't think he'd get reinstated, and I think he's pooped on us too many times already! Not to mention he's 1.5 seasons removed from the NFL, he missed training camp, there's NO WAY he's in mid-season form, he's 30 now, he's been tokin' for 2 years, and if everyone has forgotten Ricky's BIGGEST problem....it wasn't the cheeba, RICKY FUMBLES, A LOT! If I'm not mistaken, that's one thing we HAVEN'T done this year, once, which is insane! I don't, to my recollection recall ONE of our RB's fumble, yet! Ricky is good for 7-13 FUMBLES a year!

On the flip side, he's worth more to us playing than not. He (as Pat said) already cost us 2 first-rounders. He HAS broken about every team record, won the Pro Bowl MVP the year he gained 1800 yards!

Then again, if this about the future, I doubt he has much of one, and I'd rather know if L Booker was a waste or not....It also can't be good for the locker room

Either way, I don't think he's the answer, the savior, and I don't think after all the factors above that he would take much heat off of the rookie QB, or produce what he has in the past.

He's got 2 weeks to practice....

Decisions, decisions. Ricky Williams is a nut, but man can he play football. One of his main attributes (besides having an eye for finding the hole in the defense)is his ability to catch out of the backfield. Naturally he's not the savior for this team, but if he is straight (a big if), him and Chatman would be awesome. Next year, I don't know. You'd hate to trade Chatman and rely on Williams (again) and Brown.
His trade value may not be that high (no pun intended) but he could bring a 6th or maybe a 5th. It would be our luck the Patriots would take him and he would become the hardest worker and a world beater, because he could have been one of the all time greats.

5:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Remember Ricky only smoked pot,not like all these other athletes that are involved in shootings, violence, and hanging out with thugs. He paid the price by being suspended. Cam better play him to get trade value for next year, he's cut to many players and gotten nothin in return!

Marc,
Grow up. Enough of the anti-marijuana comments. Ricky was smoking it the whole time he played, including the year he led the NFL in rushing. Marijuana is not bad for people. It helps Ricky, and many others, with issues. The only reason it can be seen as bad is because it is smoke. That can be dealt with by using a vaporizer. Using a high quality vaporizer, like the Volcano, eliminates all carcinogenic effects, making it much healthier than sugar.

Troy,
Marc can't grow up. He was in the army, and has been turned into a "good soldier." His mind has already been programmed to believe nothing but what his government tells him. His capability for rational thought has been destroyed. If his government ordered him to kill someone, he would do it without question. A man like this is not capable of thinking for himself.

Anonymous,
Once again.
I was not "Programmed" I'm not "incapable" of rational thought. The Army didn't make me who I am. I quit smoking BEFORE I joined the Army (Pay attention weedheads) because it lost it's positive affects. (i.e. I would think about NEGATIVE shit way too much as opposed to laughing) It wasn't FUN anymore.

BTW, it sounds like you're belittling and degrading those that are killing for us, and are still in the military. (unless of course, I was the only one that was programmed by the big, bad government)

With ALL THAT being said, back to the topic....Is there ANYONE in here that wouldn't stop smoking for Ricky's contract? If so, shoot yourself, you, like him, are a LOSER.

Armando, don't you think it is a little early to assume the Fins won't include Ricky in their plans for 08? I know, I know, the history... but Cam hasn't even met him, and we don't know how he will perform over the last five games. What if he plays great? Then what? And what if Cam actually respects, if not likes, the guy as a football player? Way too early for you to make a guess on 08, so why bother? I like a lot of your reporting, but some of your prognosticating is, for lack of a better word, silly.

Not that you people like my posts here, but guess what? I don't care, and I do have an opinion.

First, Sonny Crockett, right on the mark!

Second, marcus, flpd, could your noses be any browner?

Third, Patrick, were you tokin' in the back room with Ricky before you wrote that lame post?

Tom@jax, you are the epitome of the Fantasy League fan. Wow!

And to the anonymous poster who says we don't need a good QB? Um, have you checked out the teams that won Super Bowl's in the past 5-6 years? Asinine statement. No wonder it was anonymous.

Ok, not to dispute the irrefutable logic of the great SI (um, didn't they pick the 'Fins to win the Super Bowl last year?), but we all know that the drafting and personnel decisions the team has made this millenium have been brutal to the team, and to the fans, so none of that should come as any surprise to the real fans of this team.

It's way too early to tell what this years draft will turn out to be in the long run. It takes more than 9 games, and by the way, the info in that article about Jr.'s stats can't include the 2 TD's that he returned, nor the 50 yarder that were all called back because of penalties. I bet if he got credit for them, his numbers would vault him pretty high up on the list of returners.

Even you people have to see the potential when this team has more time to work together, and Cameron and Mueller have another draft or two to address the needs on Defense. They lost 5 games by 3 points. That is competing, regardless of what you think.

I also believe the Special Teams may need a new coach in the off-season, because they are anything but special.

Ask Ted Ginn Jr.

A cocktail at happy hour is fine, a pack of cigarretes is fine, a joint is no different, perhaps even less harmful, and not a drug like coke or marijuana. I used to smoke but stopped. Why is there all this talk about trading, the MVP of the pro bowl, Ricky Williams at the end of this season?
Ronnie Brown just got knee surgery and will be out for a year. That means he won't be availible to start working out until the middle of next season. That means he will be out of shape and weak, so forget about Ronnie Brown till the 2009 season.
The end of this season is the same as the beginning of next season, and we need to spend our draft choices on defence, so we NEED Ricky next year too. Duh!!

I'm a black man, and I have to fear for my life anytime a police officer rolls by. Black men are often killed in this country.
While Ted is not in favor of anarchy, I am an anarcho-syndicalist, which is a type of anarchism. While you've been told that anarchism = no rules, that is not true. Anarchism is about everyone coming together and deciding how society should be run. Everyone having equal power. It is not believing in a government where people have no power, like the in the United States. It can be seen as similar to populism.
The only people we would have to fear in this society is people looking to conquer others, like our government has done and continues to do.
Ted's aversion to Anarchism probably arises from the fact that the United States has demonized it. In the early 1900's Anarchism was very popular, and the United States had to demonize it, like they do with so many things (marijuana), in order to discredit it. They had to do this because it is, in fact, the most logical system. No system of oppressers to keep people in poverty.

Marc,
Football cannot be separated from politics. The NFL promotes the same things that our government does, flag waving, blind respect for soldiers, etc.
Also, hating gays and thinking marijuana is evil are conservative view points. The Republican party expresses these same opinions, just in a more tactful way than you yourself do.
However, Democrats are too conservative for many of us, as well.

C’mon really, do you think all is well “this time” with Ricky…do you let yourself get sucked in again?? Nice guy, great talent, just not your man for a long NFL career. Hey Guitariff,
The army is comprised of poor people. The United States keeps the poor class so impoverished that they have no choice to but to join the army.
Ever wonder why there are so many black people in the army? It is because the government keeps black people poor.
What else does the government do to the poor class, besides keeping them poor? It keeps them ignorant.
That is why you and Marc come off so harsh. You can't reason, so you spit swear words at people.
I have to say, I feel for you. I really do. It is a shame that the government has treated you, and so many, so poorly.

Umm, black dude, err, JAMAL...You really need to get off your high horse. The Army is comprised of poor people? And I'm the ignorant, prejudice one. The military is a microcosm of society. There's educated and wealthy (generally officers) and there's middle class, and there's poor. There's liberals and conservatives. Sure, the MAJORITY are probably middle, and lower-middle class folks such as I was, but that hardly deserves your pity. The government doesn't keep anybody poor or ignorant. The ghettos aren't an instituation. Racism excists, so does counter-racism. GET OVER IT! A black man that fears for your life from police, degrades the military, and is abhored by the poor. I'm guessing you were one of the fortunate few brothers that wasn't born in the ghetto, huh? The government or military didn't treat me unfairly, nor was my hand forced due to ignorance or poverty. Keep your pity. We sound harsh because we gave up our rights to protect yours, in one fashion or another. (You can argue that however you see fit) And here's the kicker, for you (the one who's afraid of police), guess who rates higher than the military according to society? That's right, COPS, along with firefighters, and just about every other profession. Maybe you should try being THANKFUL that past generations DID fight for the freedoms we do enjoy. No matter how flawed our system is (I'm not blind or naive enough to think it's not) it's still the best one around, and this (AMERICA) is still the greatest nation around. Once again, if you disagree take a trip to some of the countries I've been to.

BTW, no need to POISON the next blog with this nonesense

This Bozo of a Pseudo-Head Coach better include #34, who happens to be the ultimate defensive coordinator nightmare. A Phantom Runaway Train like Ricky, of whom I'm under the impression that next year the UPS and the FSU guys are going to be his backups. Jesse let him be draft pick fodder. If this buffoon with happens to go by the short name of a photography and film capturing device, does not engage 34 services, kiss your job goodbuy.
