Rookie John Beck to start against the Eagles

The John Beck era has arrived.

The Dolphins will announce later this afternoon that Beck, the team's rookie second-round draft pick, will make his first NFL start against the Eagles Sunday according to a source. Beck will replace Cleo Lemon, who has started the past four games after replacing Trent Green, who is out for the season with concussion issues.

Beck will make his debut in one of the NFL's unfriendliest environments against the blitzing, pressuring defense Eagles defensive coordinator Jimmie Johnson likes to run. Earlier this week coach Cam Cameron said the venue would not determine which quarterback he would pick as his starter.

Cameron's criteria for picking his starter has been which quarterback is most prepared and deserving of having the job. Cameron has said it would be the player who, "gives us the best chance to win."

Despite this Lemon had been unable to win any of his four starts since taking over from Green, who did not win in any of his five starts. The Dolphins are the only winless team in the NFL.

Now it falls to Beck. But in handing the keys to the Miami offense to the Beck, Cameron has transitioned to the player the team is hopeful will hold the job for years to come.

I hope you're right, because the Palm Beach Post is reporting that "a source says Lemon will start". I don't see how Cameron can not start Beck.

Michael, I am not guessing. I have been told this is the case and I feel confident enough in my source to go with it.

By the way, skeptisism is good. You should be a reporter.

Hopeful is right. Beck has done nothing to impress...keep your expectations in check because he could easily flop.

Anyone who watched Beck at BYU over the course of a couple of seasons knows that he has NFL talent; he consistently made NFL throws, he has timing, touch, an ability to read the defense, an ability to manipulate coverage, he has the feet to get outside the pocket and make plays. The biggest issue that John Beck has to conern himself with is whether he can match the unfair levels of expectation set him by Dan Marino and by the fans. We don't need him to be Marino or Brady good. We need him to be Jason Campbell or Matt Hasselbeck good.

Having watched him a number of times for the Cougars, nothing I saw makes me think that he won't be anything other than a success in Miami.

Will he struggle? Of course. But this time in two years time, I think we'll be priasing the decision made on draft day by Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller to bypass Brady Quinn for Ted Ginn and to stick to their guns and take John Beck, the QB they wanted all along.

This must be correct because I doubt Arrrrrmando would screw around on his beloved #1 blog at the Herald and post crapola.

Arrrmando, good scoop if this is true!

I also appreciated your comments yesterday about what to expect once the kid starts. Personally, we're at 0-9, I don't expect this guy, in the LEAST, to be the second coming of Dan Marino. I'm not even sure at this point, if he's the second coming of Browning Nagle.

You want to talk about throwing the kid to the wolves? Thats what being named the starter for your first ever game at Lincoln Field in Philly will be like. This is the place that has a JAIL inside the stadium to lock up rowdy fans. The Eagles D is nicked up, but still fearsome.

Up to now, I never really doubted CAM, but I'm doubting him now. He should have let Beck have a few snaps at home last week. Now it'll be like throwing water on a grease fire.

I hope that collectively, as fans, if the kid falters, that we will still give him the support he needs. We must realize the situation that this team is in and no one person will dig us out, and that includes Beck. What I do want to see is Beck start to build a rapport with the younger guys...with Ginn, with Hagan, and with Peele and Martin. I think Marty Booker is a goner after this year. He just never did anything special in a Fins uniform.

I just hope Westbrook doesn't tear us a new one.

What's the worse thing that could happen, we lose. Give him a chance and if he does not work out we always have 1st draft pick!

It's about time they have decided to follow their game plan. Like Jason Taylor said, “it’s a rebuilding year". My only problem is why would you start Beck against the eagles and not the bills. Again, stick to the game plan.

I'm actually excited to see this game now. I would rather see Beck start and lose the rest of the games than watch him ride the pine for the rest of the season.

Look, we need to see Beck play, we need to evaluate him to make better draft choises next year, I like the upside on this kid, he will make mistakes, but lets watch the final results.

I just don't understand why this wasn't done last week AT home against BUF who blitzes a lot less and has a more simplified defensive scheme.

He can't be any worse than Lemon. At least if he fails, he will gain from the experience and we will get to see how he handles adversity from the start.

About freaking time...Beck will be the answer we've been looking for. He might not win us every game from here on, but he will not lose us any games either. He is mature (not like other rookies) and has a s***t lot of talent...

Go DOLPHINS...

First happy moment for Dolphins fans in 9 weeks...

Now we have to RALLY BEHIND BECK. No unrealistic expectations. No calls for him to be benched WHEN he struggles - especially at Philly.

He has talent. He is a winner. Fans need to not let their impatience derail things. Getting down on him or (incredibly stupidly) booing him would be the most counter-productive thing we could do.

He's not going to be Dan Marino's clone. He's not going to win all our games. He's not going to fix the many ailments this team has.

He could well be our QB of the future though. Get on board...support John Beck.

Armando,

Why start Beck against PHI on the road, and then PIT on the road when having 2 weeks to prepare against BUF at home was available? I just don't understand it. Any insight?

Well, even though I posted the contrary yesterday, my $$'s on Mandy...Don't screw me! I don't think he'd post an article if he wasn't 99.99% sure!

I wonder how many of the douches on here will be screaming for Quinn after his first rookie mistake though.

I'm excited. From everything I've seen I think Beck is CLEARLY more capable than Ray Lucas!

Thank God Cameron finally made the right decision and to the guys asking why not start him at home, thats where the pressure is going to be on him in his first start with all the negative haters who unfortunately DO go to the games and are just waiting to have a go at his first mistake cos they are moronic and have no clue, I know this applies to a minority of the home fans but he's better starting on the road then getting some experience before facing the fickle home fans amongst us. All the dolfans need to get behind Beck and support him and if they cant do that then do everyone a favour and stay away.

Go Beck!!
Go Fins!!

"Who cares about the pothead?"

Those of us who see that right now we are a play away from having a guy named Patrick Cobbs be our starting running back.

11:22 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If it's Beck, I guarantee our 1st win happening Sunday. 1 and 9...

On Ricky, I know St. Cameron isn't gonna play him, but I say screw the "distraction" issues he may bring, we're 0 and 9!!! I say play him and see what kind of trade value he can build up. Can only help if we can get another draft pick for him... Right now he has zero trade value, so why not put him out there if he can show he still has it? Again, we're 0 and 9!!! Don't get me wrong, I like Chatman and Cobbs, but it couldn't hurt having Ricky out there. Remember, we're 0-9... nothing to lose... 0 and 9...

An you think that the pothead can fill in after missing the last season and a half smokin' dope? Shouldn't we be more concerned with Lorenzo considering even if we do play Ricky he's likely not going to be with us next year. Unless Chatman gets a good offer

It's about time... I was really getting tired of the "Lemon gives us the best chance to win" quote every week. If Cleo is our best chance to win we are in deeper dodo then a pig at the fair. In other words we are rolling in sh!t.

I'm still seeing Lemon holding the ball while the buffalo DE was running straight into his face. Earth to Cleo, earth to Cleo, throw the freaking thing! When he froze up there I was done with him. I think he can be a decent back-up but he's never going to be a top flight NFL QB and that's the bottom line.

Cameron's own words came back to haunt him because if Cleo was our best chance to win then Beck must really be crap. He backed himself into the corner of saying his prize rookie wasn't very good.

I'm going to ask for a favor from all you Phin fans who wanted Quinn. Please remember this is our team. Please remember Quinn will never play for the Phins. Please remember John Beck is out QB of the future, and hold off on your booing and calling for his head for the rest of the season. For this one time...please...PLEASE just support our young QB and let's see what he can do with SUPPORT from us all.

He deserves that much, and so does this team.
